This summer “Star Trek Into Darkness” will hit theaters. The next installment from J.J. Abrams looks to pack the same amount of action as the reboot did back in 2009. Trekkies and non-Trekkies are looking forward to see what will happen next to Captain Kirk and his crew. With many blockbuster films a video game is there to compliment the movie. Some games has the player follow the exact plot from the movie while other games lead the player right up to the start of the upcoming film.
For the Star Trek video game that came out this past month players get the latter. This game takes place between “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.” In the game you can play either in single player mode or with a partner. Players can select either Captain Kirk or Spock. One cool part of the game is that the characters are voiced by the actual cast members from the films. The voices of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are in the game.
The plot of the game is set in the 23rd century and your enemy is the Gorn. They are villains from the classic “Star Trek” TV series, but are revamped for a new generation. The Gorn are aliens that use their venom to infect their prey that either causes hallucinations or even worse it kills them. These aliens range in size and look to destroy anything and anyone that gets in their way. In the game you travel through places like New Vulcan, desolate star bases, the Enterprise, and the Gorn home world.
When you start out you can pick either Kirk or Spock. Just like the films Kirk is a shoot first ask questions later type of guy, while Spock uses stealth and his mind to defeat the Gorn. You pick the character that matches your style. You can play with a friend that is right next to you or online. Plus if your friend is not there he can pick up right in the middle of the game while you are playing. If you partner leaves the game uses artificial intelligence to move your wingman.
The gameplay takes a bit of getting used to especially when using the tricorder. Yet any Trekkie will love to use a phaser and other weapons in the “Star Trek” arsenal. The graphics are solid and the cut scenes are great and makes you feel like you are watching a movie. Along the way the more you accomplish the more abilities are unlocked to make your character more powerful.
If you are fan of “Star Trek” you enjoy playing the game, but if you are not even a casual fan of the films than you might want to wait for another game. Digital Extremes, the game’s developer, put in a solid effort to immerse you into the “Star Trek” universe. Still there are some glitches in the game that makes it a bit frustrating at times. Overall the game is entertaining and the co-op play adds to the gameplay. For more information on the game you check out the game’s website. If you do pick up the game I will steal Spock’s famous line to say, “Live long and prosper.”
