Many people feel that they are not equipped or have the ability to run their own business. The thought of being in charge literally scares them. Thinking about all the tasks and responsibilities associated with operating their own business virtually leaves their head spinning but its really not as daunting as some people make it out to be.
If you have talent and experience doing something why not use those assets to go into business for yourself?
Although some business ventures are complicated, there are quite a few that are simple to start up and operate and many of them can be started with equipment that you already have which will cut down on your overhead and expenses.
One example of a small business that can be started easily with equipment that you already have is lawn care. I know because I started this business myself several years ago.
Most of the equipment and tools that you will need you already have which means all you are left with is the task of finding customers which can be done easily as well. You already have a lawn mower, edger, trimmer, rake, broom or blower and hedge trimmer which you have been using to mow your own yard so all you need is customers to do the same thing for.
A low cost way to promote your business is by using business cards, flyers and word-of-mouth networking. If you have a computer, which most households do, you can print up your buiness cards and flyers right on your own computer.
Most software programs like Windows have business card and flyer designs that can produce very professional-looking materials.
Whenever you are out and about and run into friends or associates tell them about your business and give them a business card (or several to give to their friends) to get the word out about your business. This is a low cost way to promote your business.
You can also give them flyers when its convenient for them to pass on to their friends and associates.
Operating your business would not be that difficult either. You can simply schedule your appointments as the calls come in giving yourself plenty of time to get from one project to the next.
A small business like this is considered a sole proprietorship by the IRS which means you can use your social security number as your tax identification number for your business and file taxes as you would as an individual according to the IRS guidelines outlined in their small business tax return information booklet published yearly .
Since you are not a corporation or LLC (limited liability corporation) you can do this. Anyone who works with you must file a normal tax return for the money they earn. Because you are a sole proprietor you cannot have “employees” per se.
Anyone who works with or for you would be considered an independent contractor responsible for their own tax liability.
As you can see starting your own small business is not as hard or difficult as you might have thought. Many of these same procedures can be followed for several other small businesses such as catering or auto mechanic.
If you have talent, ability, experience or knowledge in a particular area or areas try putting them to work for you in a small business. You might just discover a hidden entrepreneur inside of you.
