Fantasy baseball starting pitchers are always a tricky bunch, and matchups typically play a bigger role in the final stat line that the starting pitcher’s name. With that in mind, each week we will look at SP stream starting pitchers who may be worth a pickup in your fantasy baseball league.
Monday – April 8
Kevin Correia – Min (2%) @ KC – Ervin Santana
After holding the Detroit Tigers to just 2 earned runs over 7 innings, Correia is an interesting flyer as a Monday stream starter against the Royals.
Wandy Rodriguez – Pit (49%) @ Ari – Trevor Cahill
A proven reliable veteran who quietly goes about his business, Rodriguez posted 6.2 shutout innings with 6 strikeouts in his season debut against the Cubs, and is a solid spot starter against the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Tuesday – April 9
Andy Pettitte – NYY (59%) @ Cle – Carlos Carrasco
Even at age 40, Pettitte can still throw the baseball effectively at the major league level. Having tossed 8 innings while allowing just 1 earned run in his season debut against the Boston Red Sox last week, Pettitte is a definite stream starter worthy SP in week 2.
Jeremy Guthrie – KC (12%) vs Min – Mike Pelfrey
Not super excited about Guthrie’s overall 2013 season stats, but after tallying 9 strikeouts while allowing just 1 earned run over 6 innings pitched in his season debut, a matchup against the light hitting Twins offense, make Guthrie spot start worthy on Monday.
Brandon Maurer – Sea (3%) vs Hou – Erik Bedard
Playing the Houston Astros opponent matchup game, Maurer is a nice flyer stream starter in deep fantasy baseball lineups for week 2.
James McDonald – Pit (32%) @ Ari – Brandon McCarthy
Always a toss up on whether you’ll get great or terrible with McDonald, his 7 innings of 1 run ball in his season debut last week, has the spark surrounding McDonald once again entering the 2013 season.
Wednesday – April 10
Wade Miley – Ari (71%) vs Pit – Jonathan Sanchez
Even though Miley is 71% owned, he is still floating around in 30% of free agent pools in fantasy baseball leagues. A matchup against the Pirates and the wild Jonathan Sanchez, could easily net Miley a victory this week.
Barry Zito – SF (27%) vs Col – Jeff Francis
Always a gamble, Zito was rock solid in his season debut as he limited the St Louis Cardinals to just 3 hits over 7 shutout innings. A matchup at home against the Rockies and Jeff Francis, could have Zito reeling in his 2nd win of the season.
Wade Davis – KC (5%) vs Min – Liam Hendriks
Davis did not show well in his debut with the Royals, as he allowed 9 hits and 4 earned runs over just 4 innings pitched against the Phillies. However a must more pitcher friendly matchup against the Twins this week, could have Davis reaching the win column.
Chad Billingsley – LAD (16%) @ SD – Erik Stults
An injury case, but always offering potential if he has his stuff working. Worth a flyer with that Dodgers offense backing him.
Thursday – April 11
Jason Vargas – LAA (28%) vs Oak – AJ Griffin
Limiting the Texas Rangers to just 1 earned run over 5.2 innings pitched is no laughing matter, so a home matchup against the Athletics seems enticing enough to warrant a stream starter spot in week 2.
Friday – April 12
Saturday – April 13
Sunday – April 14
Thursday – April 4
AJ Griffin – Oakland – 37% – vs Sea
After posting an exceptional rookie season last year to the tune of a 7-1 record with a 3.06 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 15 starts, Griffin at just %% ownership in 12 team yahoo leagues seems strange to me. Feel free to role the dice here and add Griffin to your starting lineup this week, as he easily offers more upside than downside in this matchup.
Rick Porcello – Detroit – 12% – @ Min
Coming off an exceptional spring performance, Porcello appears to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder right now. Facing a light hitting Twins lineup and a matchup against journeyman Mike Pelfrey, a nice showing in the stat column and a win is definitely within reach for Porcello to begin the season.
James McDonald – Pittsburgh – 29% – vs ChC
Before the wheels came off for McDonald down the stretch last season, he was absolutely cruising through opponents. With a fresh start and pent up energy, McDonald pitching at home in Pittsburgh against an average Cubs lineup and nothing special pitcher in Travis Wood, it is very possible that McDonald racks up a nice stat line and win in his first start of the season.
Mark Buehrle – Toronto – 37% – vs Cle
A home game against Brett Myers and the Indians is definitely a spot starter worthy game to plug Buehrle in your lineup and grab a win.
Brandon Maurer – Seattle – 0% – @ Oak
A rookie who was not expected to win a spot in the rotation, the 22 year old Maurer will be making his major league debut with this start. With the game being played in Oakland, Maurer makes for a very interesting flyer pickup, as he is a young guy who offers potential.
Friday – April 5
Dan Straily – Oakland – 10% – @ Hou
against brad peacock
Jose Quintana – White Sox – 4% – vs Sea
against blake beaven
Saturday – April 6
Shelby Miller – St Louis – 15% – @ SF
against ryan vogelsong
Julio Teheran – Atlanta – 56% – vs ChC
against carlos villanueva
Chris Tillman – Baltimore – 12% – vs Min
against vance worley
Alex Cobb – Tampa Bay – 61% – vs Cle
against scott kazmir
