Synopsis: Diamonds of the Kobolds is a level 6 module in the online game Card Hunter that will really test your heroes in extended fights. All of the scenarios have a plethora of enemies and the maps are designed to prolong combat. This doesn’t necessarily make this module harder, but it does require more complex tactics.
Enemies in Module:
Kobold Warriors – Kobold warriors are minions and like all minions in Card Hunter, can only attack once per round. They have 11 hit points, a standard move speed of run (3 squares), and make melee attacks that mostly deal 5 damage or less. They also have a bunch of blocking cards and can potentially block any attack made against them.
Armored Pig – Armored pigs are minions and thus can only attack once per round. They have 12 hit points, a normal move speed of dash (4 squares), and have a 4 damage melee attack. They also have armor cards that will reduce 2 damage 50% of the time.
Kobold Spearmen – Kobold spearmen are minions. They have 14 hit points, a normal move speed of run, and can deal up to 6 damage with mostly range 2 stab attacks. They will occasionally deal 1 less damage with their attacks due to the Wimpy card in their deck.
Kobold Avengers – Like all other kobolds in this module, kobold avengers are minions. They have 11 hit points, a standard move speed of run, and attack with a mix of mid damage bludgeoning attacks and attacks that allow them to move 1 square before attacking. Like spearmen, they will occasionally deal 1 less point of damage with attacks.
First Scenario – Gashstone Pass:
Setup – You will start the first Diamonds of the Kobolds mission near the bottom of a tight map littered with blocking and difficult terrain. Three kobold warriors are in the middle of the map, three are in the upper left corner, and two avengers are in the upper right corner.
Enemies – Kobold Warriors (6), Kobold Avengers (2)
Strategy – You need to be efficient in this map without overextending. Each individual group of kobolds isn’t that dangerous, but if all eight get close, you will be overwhelmed, especially if one of the kobolds uses the Mob Attack card which can potentially do 8 damage.
The easiest way to win this scenario is to build your wizard deck with a lot of powers that attack multiple enemies at once. The cramped quarters make cones very useful and burning is effective against the enemies because they have no armor. Pack your deck with Fire Spray, Ember Spray, and Burning Fingers. The kobolds may block those attacks, but that just opens them up to your fighter’s melee attacks. Always start with a low damage attack to get rid of a Parry and then strike hard with a high damage attack. Kobolds have nothing that bypasses armor, so a little armor will protect you, especially if you have some healing to fix any wounds you do take.
Second Scenario – Mine Entrance:
Setup – You will start the second Diamonds of the Kobolds mission in the lower right corner of a small room that is attached to a second small room by a thin hallway. Three kobold avengers stand on the left side of the room near a victory area and two armored pigs are in the top room.
Enemies – Kobold Avengers (3), Armored Pigs (3)
Strategy – Almost all of the attacks of the avengers and the pigs can be blocked by a Weak Block and a Parry will block any of them. Stock up on those cards. Also, as in the last scenario, armor is very effective here. You will want to move in towards the kobolds quickly, both because it moves you towards the victory area and because it gets you further away from the pigs. Taking the victory area is a priority, but you shouldn’t overextend to get it. Nothing here does a lot of damage alone, so you can afford to take this fight slowly unless one of your heroes dies. Use ranged attacks to pick off one avenger in the first round and then advance in the second round to make sure the pigs don’t pick off your wizard. Once the kobolds are dead, sit on the victory area and play defense with the pigs. You’ll win in 2 more rounds at most.
Third Scenario – Mineshaft:
Setup – You start this scenario near at the bottom of a map filled with interconnected tight hallways and some difficult terrain in the center of the map. Three kobold warriors are on the right side of the map, two avengers start on the left side of the map, and two spearmen start at top corners of the map.
Enemies – Kobold Warriors (3), Kobold Spearmen (2), Kobold Avengers (2)
Strategy – Kobolds may be the weakest Card Hunter enemy, but they are still dangerous in packs. Unlike the first scenario, the terrain on this map does not slow the kobolds down very much. It does create bottlenecks, though, if you position yourself well. Take advantage of this by moving into the 2 by 2 “room” to the left as quickly as possible. Kill the kobold you find there and then build your wall. To do this you need one character one square into the top hallway and the other two characters in the two rightmost squares in the tiny room.
From that point it just comes down to deck design. Your characters can only be attacked, at most, twice per turn and generally for 4-5 damage per attack. Armor of just about any sort plus a Parry or Block card should let you survive the onslaught and a little healing will bring you back to full hit points. Healing Presence cast on your middle hero will be especially useful. As odd as it seems, you are better off not attacking the enemy adjacent to your heroes whenever possible. Used ranged attacks and stab attacks to attack enemies in the back row. Eventually you will be facing a single enemy on each side that you can easily defeat with raw power.
