Synopsis: Melvelous the Magnificent is a level 8 module in the online game Card Hunter that features the same enemy three times. It has enemies you haven’t seen before in the game and is three scenarios long. The module is intentionally very weighted towards the enemies, but careful defensive play can easily negate that advantage.
Enemies in Module:
Melvelous Orc Guards – Melvelous orc guards are minions and like all minions in Card Hunter, can only attack once per round. They have 15 hit points, a standard move speed of run (3 squares), and have attacks that range in damage from 3 to 8, sometimes knocking back your characters or hitting two characters at once. They also have armor that can potentially block 4 damage, though only 1/3rd of the time and blocks that will protect against any attack. Finally, they will drop their guard regularly, discarding all armor and block cards.
Traplings – Traplings are minions. They have 11 hit points, a normal move speed of shuffle (1 square), and attack with low damage cones and a very high damage melee attack.
Melvelous – Melvelous is the first enemy in Card Hunter that takes up four squares instead of one. Melvelous has 26 hit points, a normal move speed of run, and attacks with a variety of low damage, high range spells. He also can put damaging terrain on the ground, teleport allies or enemies, allow minions to attack again, and put a curse on heroes that causes them to take extra damage. Furthermore, he has armor that only defends against spells and can prevent 3 damage. His one major drawback is that he often is unable to cast spells when within 3 squares of one of your characters.
First Scenario – Castle Hall:
Setup – You will start the first Melvelous the Magnificent mission at the bottom of a mostly open map. There are five pieces of blocking terrain in the room, mostly near the middle of the map. Melvelous orc guards start in the lower right corner, lower left corner, and at the top of the map. Two are close enough to attack after a single move. Melvelous also starts at the top of the map.
Enemies – Melvelous Orc Guards (3), Melvelous (1)
Strategy – Melvelous is not particularly dangerous unless he uses Unholy Curse. If one of your characters gets cursed, you need to make every effort possible to keep him from taking damage. If you have a dwarf in your party, Shrug It Off is a great ability to protect your dwarf. Also, if you have the skills, include Purge and Holy Presence in your cleric deck. Beyond that, lots of armor and plenty of Parry cards will protect you from the orcs. Just about any attack cards are good, but high damage ones and ones that let your move before attacking are best. Finally, put a few extra move cards in your decks and do not include any Trip cards in your decks.
When the fight starts, do not move. Use long range attacks on whichever orc you want to kill first and continue attacking when the orcs base your characters. Melvelous will attack a lot, but his sparks don’t do much damage and he can’t hurt you with Stone Spikes until the start of next turn. Make sure you do something every round because if you pass, Gary might pass too and then you could take 6 damage from Stone Spikes. Save your moves to move away from the spikes after Melvelous is out of cards. You should easily kill at least one orc per round. Once the orcs are dead, rush Melvelous. He will probably be defensive which means most of his attacks will fail if you are close. Use something to discard his Shimmering Aura before your wizard attacks, but even if you can’t, he is easily killed at this point.
Second Scenario – Chamber of Traps:
Setup – You will start the second Melvelous the Magnificent mission in the lower right corner of a map that is a room with hallways that run parallel to the room on the left, bottom, and right sides. A single square gap is in each of the three walls separating hallways. A trapling is near each gap and another is in the room. Melvelous is also near the top of the room.
Enemies – Traplings (4), Melvelous (1)
Strategy – You want a deck almost identical to the one you used in the last fight. If you don’t move, Melvelous can’t attack you and neither can the traplings. It is possible to get into a position where you can attack the trapling on the left without Melvelous being able to attack you, but it is difficult. Your best bet is to stall until the traplings move in. They are slow, so you should be able to defeat them one at a time. Once again you will want to remove enemy attachments, but this time to get rid of ongoing damage as well as Unholy Aura. Be very careful not to let the same character get hit by Unholy Aura and Infected Bite. That will cause the character 6 damage a round. After the traplings are all dead, kill Melvelous like you did last time.
Third Scenario – Sanctum of Melvelous:
Setup – You start this scenario at the bottom of a single room. A wall separates the top and bottom of the room and the wall has four single square gaps in it. Two orcs and two traplings are spread out near the bottom side of the wall and Melvelous is at the top of the room on the other side of the wall.
Enemies – Traplings (2), Melvelous Orc Guards (2), Melvelous
Strategy – In this fight Melvelous can’t get past the wall and can only get to a position where he can attack one of your heroes. Also, there are lots of places in the room that Melvelous simply can’t attack. You want to use an almost identical strategy in this fight to the first scenario. Stand still and start attacking whichever orc you want to take down. The orcs are more dangerous than the traplings, so defeat them first. Don’t move until the enemies have used all their cards and then move away from the hazard squares you are almost certainly standing on.
There is a good chance the enemies will kill one of your characters before you kill all four, but this doesn’t really matter. Once again Melvelous is not very dangerous when he is alone. This time especially you can wait behind the wall until he becomes defensive and then move in, pin him in a corner and attack with everything. Most of his spells will fail and he will fall quickly.
