We all share a dream; to be successful in what we do. Some of us want to succeed at small things and others have great ambitions. We all need a starting place. Here is what I’ve learned.
Dream: Without a dream, nothing will happen. The reason we quote the “carrot and the stick” is because it’s real. If we dangle what we desire just out of our reach, we will struggle and fight until we get it.
Education: None of us were born knowing everything. There’s too much to know for that to ever happen. In order to reach our dream, we need tools and education is one of them. In fact, after the dream, it is the most important tool. Find a teacher who can help you prepare for a better future.
Goal Setting: To reach our main goal, we often have to set smaller goals. They are usually termed as short term, medium term and long term. For a writer, those goals may be getting published, getting paid to be published and earning an actual living at it. The leap to earning a living is too far for a single jump, but it can be reached with the shorter hops and keep us motivated.
Attention to Detail: Keeping with the writing theme, it’s important to pay attention to details. These include spelling, grammar and punctuation. As important, it means proving facts and citing sources. Without these details, it’s impossible to reach even the first goal.
Starting at the Bottom: We have to pay our dues. Even with an education and attention to detail, we aren’t going to get the big, cushy job right away. It’s as important for our success as anything on this list. One reason is that when you do get the big, cushy job you’ll know what those under you are supposed to do and that they are doing it correctly.
Work Hard: Successful people know when it’s time to work hard to reach a goal. They know it because they’ve always worked hard. Playing solitaire on our work computer instead of doing the job we’ve been hired to do isn’t going to help our success rate. In fact, if we get caught, it might get us fired.
Never Give Up: Discouragement is all around us. It’s even inside us sometimes. That little voice that says, “You’ll never amount to anything” is difficult to ignore. However, if we give up, we won’t succeed. We may have to change our strategy, but not the end results.
Success starts with these things. They are tools any of us can use. It won’t happen overnight. It may take years. Perseverance and hard work will eventually pay off.
