An afternoon tea party makes the perfect birthday party theme. Little girls, dressed in fine clothes, enjoying refreshments and chatter. Make your girl feel all grown up hosting this fine affair.
Invite your guests with formal invitations. Hand write in calligraphy or use a calligraphy script on the computer. Personalize each one with the little guest’s name done in a fancy script. Encourage all guests to come dressed in fine clothes for the fun tea party. Feather boas and fancy hats are encouraged.
Decorate for the Tea Party
Decorations for your Tea Party birthday celebration should have an elegant feel. Start with creating a beautiful table. Create the perfect tea party space by first placing a fancy tablecloth onto the table. Be cautious to choose your table covering with the knowledge that little hands will often spill! Place fresh flowers in a small vase as a centerpiece. Use visually appealing plates and tea cups with saucers. Place each teacup on a pretty lace doily, either cloth or paper. If possible, have cloth napkins rolled at each place setting. Hand-written place-cards with each guest’s name should mark each seat. Use lace or satin accents to create a formal table look. A length of lace, burlap or a folded old curtain can be used to create a beautiful table runner down the center of the table.
Food and Beverages
Presentation is important with the food and beverages at a tea party. The food should have a grown-up feel, but with age appropriate flavors. As part of the food presentation create a card with the menu written out in courses. Each dish should be dressed up with a fancy-sounding name. Portions should be small, but pretty.
Mini peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into tiny squares or use small cookie cutters to cut into fun shapes. Cream cheese and pineapple sandwiches will also delight a party guest’s taste buds. Deviled eggs with piped yolks are a tea party favorite. Mini quiches also give an air of elegance to the part.
Instead of having a large cake, individual mini cupcakes placed on a serving tray in the center of the table will give each guest the perfect portion. Chocolate dipped strawberries or fruit salad will delight guests. Serve all of the food on small plates, either china dessert plates or high quality clear plastic plates.
Serve all beverages in tea cups complete with saucer. It does not have to be cups and saucers from one tea set, mismatched are fine and might add to the fun. Sweetened hot tea can be served, but hot cocoa, chocolate milk or fruit juice can easily stand in for the tea.
Activity: Formal Photograph
Stage an area to take formal pictures of each party guest dressed up in her fine clothes. It should have a solid wall or appealing background with a few tea party themed items to accent the photograph. Have a box of accessories ready for the ladies to choose from for different looks in pictures. Use your digital camera take pictures of each guest. Have each girl strike several poses for the camera. Encourage the girls to take pictures together in small groups and one large one! Make sure to get a picture of the birthday girl with each of her guests. Share with their parents via online upload, email or CD.
