Trying to find the best comedy movies can be challenging, but trying to narrow it down to only the top 3 can be nearly impossible. Comedy is a broad genre and has many subtypes. Below, I have broken it down into three main types.
- Romantic – The mushy stuff; I would watch with my girlfriend.
- Stand-Up – No plot or storyline; raw comedy.
- Stupid Funny – Where I’m asking myself through the entire movie “Did he/she really just do that?”
My Favorite Movies (from the types listed above)
Crazy Stupid Love (Romantic Comedy) 2011: Starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Julianne Moore
When Emily, (Julianne Moore) tells her husband Cal; (Steve Carell) she wants a divorce, it turns his whole world upside down. He has always done right by his wife, or so he thought. After all, they had two children together, a daughter in college, and a younger son who still needs a babysitter (and he is in love with the babysitter; unknowing that she’s in love with his dad.)
Cal meets up with a professional womanizer, Jacob (Ryan Gosling) who is determined to teach him everything he knows about women. Slowly, Cal begins to learn the “love them and leave them” motto, but the transformation process is hilarious!
“I don’t know whether to help you or euthanize you.” – Jacob speaking to Cal.
When Jacob falls for this girl, and tells Cal that he’s done with the game, Cal starts to have second thoughts as well. He still loves his wife (but she’s in love with a guy from work.) With everyone falling in love with the wrong person and a twist ending that actually had me bent over laughing – this movie became my all time favorite comedy!
Bill Cosby Himself (Stand-up Comedy) 1983: Starring … um … Bill Cosby Himself!
This is my favorite stand-up act of all time. He covers things like: a trip to the dentist, people who drink too much, raising children, and one of my personal favorites, brother-sister love. Below is a short quote from the film that I find hilarious because it happens with my kids all the time.
Son: “Dad, sissy’s touching me.”
Bill Cosby: “So what!” “She touches me too!”
The absolute raw humor displayed in this movie earns it its place on my top 3 list. (Being released in my birth year is just a bonus)
The Hangover (Stupid Funny) 2009: Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis
After being “roofied” at a bachelor party, and waking up in a daze, three guys set out on a journey to find something very important for the wedding to take place – the groom! Even if you’re like me, and don’t watch “stupid funny” comedies very often, this one is definitely worth checking out.
Alan’s randomness is what earns this film its place at number three on my list, probably because I can totally relate.
Stu: (while Alan adds pepper to the “roofied” steak) “Why are you peppering the steak? You don’t know if tigers like pepper.”
Alan: “Tigers love pepper. They hate cinnamon.”
