The Best Little Donut House in Town (or Donuts as Allegory for Love)

by fat vox

Somehow, perhaps by the same mysterious force that guides a bee to the honeysuckle, a mere three days after moving to Concord, my partner and I found ourselves standing in front of a small, nondescript and a bit worn around the edges building with a sign in front that, though of humble composition, declared unabashedly that this was The Best Little Donut House in Town.

It was late in the day, after hours, and the donut house was closed, but it immediately captured my attention and the image of it stuck with me in a way that makes me think that there is a Donut Cupid, and the arrow had found its mark. Luckily, for me, my partner was equally smitten and we determined to visit this intriguing place to sample the goods soon.

“Soon”, in this case and with deliberate adjustments to our alarm clock, was the next day, 5:15 am. Expectations, you might imagine, and rightly so, were running high as we drove at that dark hour on un-busy streets toward our intended destination. Fantasies of glistening apple fritters and other doughy delights danced in our groggy heads. What amazing-ness would we find when we stepped through the door of The Best Little Donut House in Town? Was this to be a date with destiny?

Aaah, such are the questions that come bubbling up when we dare to seek the objects of our affections, more often than not to suffer the cruel burst of those diaphanous dreams from the sharp slap of reality. But, and thus the reason for sustenance of hope, there are exceptional instances, when we discover the pearl, when we hold all the aces, when we find true love. When (yes, it’s true) we find heavenly donuts on planet Earth by stepping through the front door portal of The Best Little Donut House in Town.

And, that, happily, is how my partner and I came to realize the pleasures derived from the delicious (see below for more specifics) donuts and pastries at The Best Little Donut House in Town.

P.S. In parting – and to take the whole ‘donut as allegory for love’ thing to its full, if not over done, extent – as your mom may have cautioned you, it can be foolhardy to judge a book by its cover. Therefore, if your quest is in fact to experience donut bliss, do not be distracted by un-glittery surroundings. Your taste buds will thank you for heeding this advice. Oh, and one more thing, you won’t find better, kinder service anywhere.

* “Delicious” is our subjective opinion. Objectively, our findings were that the donuts at The Best Little Donut House in Town are superbly (sorry, trying to be objective here) crunchy on the outside, divinely (that one slipped out) moist and flavorful on the inside, incredibly (I give up) reasonably priced, and genuinely the best donuts we’ve ever experienced.
