“The Face”: Television Show Review

by fat vox

Do you love high fashion? Are you a sucker for runway shows and fierce competition? If you answered yes to both of the above questions, chances are you are an addict of shows like America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway. Chances are also good that you have come across Oxygen’s new show The Face. But, is it worth watching or is it just another America’s Next Top Model?

The Face is a reality show that pits three supermodels and their team of aspiring models against each other in search of “the face” of the next great model. The show is hosted by Nigel Barker, fashion photographer best known for his work on Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model. The three super model coaches are Coco Rocha, Karolina Kurkova, and Naomi Campbell. Each week a client presents a project for the modeling teams, and the teams then compete for the job. The client picks the winning team. The losing teams then have to pick one girl each to put up for elimination. At this point, the winning team’s coach gets to choose which of the two models is eliminated.

The Face is a refreshing change from America’s Next Top Model. Although they are similar, The Face does not have a panel of judges to decide which model is sent home. This is left up to the winning team’s coach which I think is a better idea. As a fan of America’s Next Top Model, there were times when I felt that some models were wrongly sent home by the panel because one of the judges thought the model had a bad photo shoot or they were not young enough to be a top model or they were heavier than the other girls.

Another plus for The Face is that the actual client gets to decide who did the best job. These jobs are not only concerned with who has the most high fashion look. Models with commercial looks are also able to win competitions.

Naomi Campbell, Coco Rocha, and Karolina Kurkova are great. They not only coach their own girls, they demonstrate modeling moves and techniques to all of the models. And, fashion photographer Nigel Barker brings his own expertise to the set.

Is there drama between the aspiring models? Yes. Competition is not only brewing between the three modeling teams, but within them as well.

The Face is Oxygen’s new reality show. And, although it is similar to America’s Next Top Model, it does have its own unique favor. Is it worth watching? Yes. If you can’t get enough of the world of high fashion or the fierce competition between aspiring models, then The Face is for you.
