Money May always fights on or around cinco de mayo, May 5th.
What we know is that he will not fight Manny Pacquiao because Pacman has already agreed to fight to avenge his lose against Timothy Bradley next April, as I argued in Manny Pacquiao Should Fight Timothy Bradley, http://voices.yahoo.com/manny-pacquiao-fight-timothy-bradley-12477495.html?cat=14. What we don’t know is who of Marcos Maidana or Amir Khan Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to fight.
Based on boxing alone Marcos Maidana should be the one Floyd Mayweather Jr. should challenge for a fight next May. Maidana is a young veteran fighter that had been fighting at the highest level in the welterweight division for quite a few years now. He has a signature wins over former welterweight title holder victor Ortiz and Josesito López. And most recently last December he fought, Floyd Mayweather want to be, Adrien Broner and beat him after knocking him down twice. This was a huge victory for Marcos Maidana. In fact, the fight shook the boxing world, Maidana performance, apart from the result itself, was very impressive.
Alternatively, Amir Khan is not coming off a huge win. He fought last on in Sheffield, England, against veteran Julio Diaz. He fought a good fight with lots of heart and determination to win against the still very capable 34 year old Diaz. His skill level has not changed. His skills were still as high as before he got knocked out. Khan was still sharp, fast and precise. He threw a lot of combinations and dictated the pace of the fight, but he was punched and hurt a few times. His adversary was not a pay per view star, yet he was tough. Even if Khan reversed the losing dynamic he was on, he is not back in the top of the sport at 140, the light welterweight division.
What has Khan done lately? Who has he beat to deserve fighting the world’s best boxer? Nobody!
In my opinion, If Amir Khan wants a shot at fighting Mayweather, he needs to take care of Danny “Swift” Garcia first. Unless he fights and beats in a decisive fashion the man who knocked him out, he has no business being in the ring with Money Mayweather.
Remember that analysis was based on boxing alone. Now, from a business stand point, what was once a slam dunk from a boxing stand point has now become almost a dilemma. Marcos Maidana is from Argentina. And even though he and Adrien Broner packed the Alamodome in San Antonio, it is not clear that Marcos Maidana is a pay per view attraction. Similarly, even if Maidana is followed by a lot a Mexican-American and Mexican in the North America fans, he is not as popular as Oscar De La Hoya was and certainly not as popular as Juan Manuel Marquez and Canelo Alvarez are today. Consequently, Mayweather may not get the pay per view numbers he wants fighting Maidana.
On the other hand, Amir Khan will be a bigger draw. Mayweather is probably hoping to have English fans follow the fight the way they did when he fought an undefeated Ricky “the Hitman” Hatton back in December 2007. In that case he would probably meet the pay per view numbers he wants to achieve.
If Mayweather is done fighting for his legacy, then should fight Khan and promote the fight in England but not solely there were he to be masterful in maximizing Amir Khan’s marketability. He should push it to the extreme and go to the Arabian gulf, Dubai, Doha Abu Dhabi and to Pakistan to promote the fight so that Money Mayweather don’t only get the British fans to watch but also fans in the Arabian gulf and in Pakistan which could decide to watch the only top level Muslim boxer in his bout against the best fighter pound for pound.
Business wise this move would be the single best move Floyd Mayweather Jr. can make apart from fighting Manny Pacquiao of course.
Reports indicates that Money May has chosen Khan over Maidana for May 3rd bout in his hometown of Las Vegas in the MGM Grand. The king of boxing will soon decides to confirm the name of his opponent. And who he selects will tell us a lot about his intentions. If he chooses Maidana, then we will know that we are still dealing with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. the fighter who wants to be remembered as the “The Best Ever” as he likes put it. However, if he decides to fight Amir Khan, then we will know that we are no longer dealing with Mayweather the fighter but instead with Mayweather the businessman.
