Do you remember the Rascals’ song a “Ray of Hope”? It has the lyric:
“As long as there is a ray of hope
I got to wait my turn till I can vote
As long as there is a ray of hope”
Isn’t it clear that in a democracy the politicians are supposed to follow the will of the people! Why is our democracy not following what the majority of our citizens are begging for? We all know that the country as a whole, Republicans and even NRA members support making our gun control legislation more stringent? Doesn’t it seem hopeless?
I’d rather be on the side of those trying to reduce gun violence. Isn’t a no-brainer? The Democrats realized that the GOP would side the NRA. They always have. The background check was a modest concession and we couldn’t even get that? That shouldn’t be a surprise with the track history of the “Party of No” during President Obama’s term.
The article “RNC ad with Obama and Newtown mother infuriates DNC” shows just how vile GOP political tactics can descend.
The article states “The ad, called “The First 100 Days,” criticizes Obama on the failure of his legislative agenda, including gun control, so far in Congress. It features a voiceover saying that Obama’s agenda has “already suffered a string of defeats,” and a black and white photo of the president reaching to embrace Nicole Hockley, the distraught mother of a victim in the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.”
How can anyone think that there is any separation between the NRA and the GOP after this? Just who–other than their ever dwindling base, can be enamored with this?
When the GOP had town hall meetings attacking President Obama’s Affordable Care Act they had rabid hordes of right-wingers packing the aisles. That isn’t the case now because it is easy to understand people can have guns, but can also want gun control.
The article “Senators Who Voted To Kill Background Checks Dodge Meetings With Gun Victims” describes how some decent upstanding citizens who have had members of their families become victims of gun violence tried to debate some of the GOP politicians. The GOP politicians didn’t honor these requests with responses. How could they? They don’t want to say anything that might antagonize the NRA even though our citizens want stricter gun control laws.
The new leader of the NRA is trying to rile up his membership.
The article “Incoming NRA President Calls Civil War The ‘War Of Northern Aggression'” shows how vile incoming National Rifle Association President Jim Porter is going to be. After the unfortunate labeling of our country’s Civil War he is quoted as saying “But that was the very reason that they started the National Rifle Association, was to teach and train the civilian in the use of the standard military firearm. And I am one who still feels very strongly that that is one of our greatest charges that we can have today, is to train the civilian in the use of the standard military firearm, so that when they have to fight for their country they’re ready to do it. Also, when they’re ready to fight tyranny, they’re ready to do it. Also, when they’re ready to fight tyranny, they have the wherewithal and the weapons to do it.”
So that’s the story. The NRA wants everybody to be able to be armed to the teeth. They like to pretend that we’ll have to protect ourselves from the government. The GOP lauds the fact that our President couldn’t get gun control legislation passed. Our President couldn’t because the GOP’s buddy, the NRA, fought viciously to gets its way.
