Everyday people sit down and play video games. Are they a waste of time? What’s the benefit of playing games every day? Is there anything detrimental about playing games on a regular basis? In this article we will explore these questions.
The Major Benefits
We start off with the major benefits of playing video games. They include strategic thinking, relaxation therapy, a challenge, and interactive storytelling.
Gaming makes you thing strategically. It helps you problem solve. You look at a problem with many angles and then seek to find a solution. It exercises the frontal lobes as we are actively engaged in solving some kind of scenario; whether it be finishing a maze, finding some kind of item, etc. Video gaming is nothing more than 21st century puzzle solving.
Video gaming is a relaxation activity for most guys, but it’s also a form of rest. We build up testosterone while we watch television or veg out playing games according to Dr. John Gray.
For men, testosterone is stimulated through fixing things, solving things and achieving things, or simply rest, which also rebuilds testosterone.
According to Dr. John Gray;
Men are always driven in directions that will help stimulate testosterone and those can include situations where men can feel a challenge, where there is competition and where he can feel success resulting from achievement. Measurable success and achievement stimulates testosterone.
Many of us play games because of the challenge. We want to see if we can beat our previous score or just get by a real tough maze. Half the time, I think I play games because they challenge me to do better than I did before; they challenge me to be smarter and to think on my feet.
Games nowadays, are not unlike interactive novels; take for example the Final Fantasy or Zelda Series. There are numerous cut scenes with CGI graphics showing the stories unfold, blended with masterful music and narration. People can enjoy the entertaining narratives as the gamer progresses further in the game.
The gamer gets to watch new scenes unfold before him or her. Gaming has expanded to be much more then killing monsters. It has become interactive storytelling, whereby the hero/heroine moves the story forward by their interactive game play.
The Minor Drawbacks
Anything used in excess can have its downside; with gaming, it’s time wasting, it can cause epilepsy -in some people- and it dis-connects one, from real life.
On the flip side, gaming is no different from imaginative dreaming. We could be doing something more productive with our time. Yet, gaming usually takes up our rest time.
An over indulgence in gaming is essentially wasteful. This may take away time from reading books, study, self-improvement and exercising; if we’re not actively in engaged in something like Wii Sports, or Sports Champions on Playstation 3– which are very physical games.
Gaming requires moderation, and should be a reward after real world activities have been accomplished.
Gaming may cause epilepsy in some people. There was one situation where a 24 year old suffered a seizure after playing a video game from only three feet away. This is called photosensitive epilepsy or PSE.
According to JEMS:
This type of seizure activity is triggered by such visual stimuli as flickering or flashing lights from fireworks, video games or TV broadcasts.
My best advice is to, sit much farther than three feet away and never over indulge or don’t play video games if you’re predisposed to this condition.
Disconnect from World
Constant gaming, can be a total disconnect from the real world. If you play too many video games you may lose touch with reality. Make sure you get some news stories in or something. Don’t play a video game for more than 2 hours without taking some kind of rest from it.
