Drug Abuse Warning Network, which is a Public Health Surveillance System, indicates that Emergency Department episodes in drug-abuse have more than doubled in recent years according to surveys taken from 21 Metropolitan Cities in U.S. Although some of us may not hear or witness the alarming increase in the intake of drugs, the dangerous and drastic effects are self-evident. Intense suffering and agonizing deaths, suicides, murders and thefts, which are on the increase in public places like the Malls or School Campuses, primarily stem from habitual drug addiction.
Habitual drug-takers’ first and last thought is: how to get the next dose. The drug-taker lives in constant dread of suffering should he or she fail to secure it. This haunting dread drives the drug-taker to use any means no matter how sinister or violent – to attain this goal.
~ Parental Role
What can we do to ensure that our youths stay clear off the perils of drug abuse? Let us examine some important factors that have the potential of eliminating risks and prevent senseless destruction and human loss. Parents form the backbone of every home. It is crucial that parents spend as much time as possible with their children to better understand their children’s complex needs. Parents need to build up their children’s confidence and self-esteem. This dissuades them from resorting to harmful chemical substances and using them as ‘crutches’ or aids to living.
~ Provide Love and Companionship:
Children, who are deprived of these two life-sustaining ingredients, often are driven to despair, depression and low self-esteem. This scenario lures the youngsters away from their family in a quest for ‘greener pastures.’ They indulge in meeting up with so-called friends in gay, seductive and mysterious places like the popular ‘joints’ and ‘dens.’ This often tends to land them into the depths of drug-addiction at a tender age.
~Knowledge is Power:
Armed with knowledge, parents can be well equipped to guide their children on the drug-free path. Parents would do well to warn their children of the dangers of drug abuse: such as the sludging of the red blood cells being denied the vital oxygen, and the premature loss of memory and reasoning power. It is possible that a young student may be lured into drug experimentation as he or she longs to be accepted by a peer group. But if he or she is aware of the grave consequences, the student definitely would be on guard and be better able to counteract those in the peer group.
~ Importance of Communicating:
The vast emptiness frequently noticed in youngsters is frightening. Communicating and spending quality time with children is vitally important. Parents – who keep a constant and close check on the type of company their children keep – never fail. These parents have frequent intelligent conversations with their children and tactfully monitor their children’s activities.
~ Avoiding Boredom:
Kids will go where there is excitement. They will stay where there is love. Parents simply cannot outsource the responsibility they owe to their children. Boredom and idleness are their number one enemies. Cultivating good habits, like that of reading in children, would be far more beneficial to the child than encouraging them in passive activities like watching the television. Creative activities centered on the fine arts help keep children occupied and safe. By encouraging great outdoors activities like hiking, biking, skiing and swimming, parents can help children to divert their minds and thus avoid boredom.
~ Inculcating Values:
Parents need to inculcate essential values of life and incorporate them into their children’s thinking and family lifestyle. This is most effective when administered by precepts and examples. By manifesting love and trust, parents can infuse feelings of personal worth and develop individuals of strength and character.
~ Entrusting Responsibility:
“I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity an obligation; every possession, a duty.” John Rockefeller Jr. It is best that responsibility be taught to children from the early stage of development as children need to develop an internalized-control system living with a set of rules and boundaries within a family. Wise parents also will not rescue their children from the consequences of their behavior.
Alas, man is the only animal, supposedly a thinking animal, which will willfully destroy himself. Let us as responsible citizens, STOP our present day youth from incapacitating themselves from the productive role. Let us make a united effort to combat this pernicious evil of drug use. Let us all right thinking individuals, not allow our youth to burden our families, our societies, and our nations. Let us stop our youth from the perils of drug abuse. This is our moral responsibility.
