Recently, I splurged on the new Kindle Fire and the Samsung Galaxy S 4 . My life will never be the same. Right now there is so much to learn because both devices are packed with a ton of features. However, I see both of them helping me work smarter, not harder.
The Kindle Fire is awesome! I am a late adopter of the e-reader trend and this is my first one. It might as well be a 7″ tablet because it has most of the features of a tablet plus the e-reader. In reality, I just added another tablet to my arsenal of gadgets because it is so much more than an e-reader. In fact, I have not read any books on it yet because I am still playing with all the free apps and cool features. It has a dual core processor, which makes it extremely fast and the HD is outstanding! This Kindle even has texting. You can do everything except talk on it!
Therefore, I decided to upgrade my dumb phone to a smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4. I had not owned a smartphone since the first iPhone, which departed my possession under tragic circumstances. Moreover, my other cheaper phones always ended up getting wet or submerged in water. I was using basic phones just to talk and text, because I was tired of replacing smartphones. Since I had been using a dumb phone and made it for an entire year with the same phone, I decided to get the best phone that I could find to meet my needs and wants. Moreover, this phone gave me many unexpected surprises!
In my opinion, it is the best phone currently available. The 5″ screen is what first piqued my interest because at my age, I am starting to have some visual issues and I refuse to wear bifocals. This is the smartest smartphone I have ever seen. It has so many features and available free apps that it will probably take a year for me to figure them all out. The coolest standard features are the gestures. In addition to the Air View and Air Gesture capabilities, you can also control the Samsung Galaxy S4 through physical motions. For instance, lift the phone to your ear to dial the contact currently displayed on the screen or cover the display with your hand to mute/pause any playing sounds.
The language translator works great too. I spoke into the phone in English and it translated what I wanted to say in Spanish. Moreover, another great feature to have is what they call WatchON. You can program it to be the remote for almost every TV and cable box in your house. I sure had fun secretly setting that feature up, and I had my fellow household occupants wondering why their televisions were mysteriously changing channels last night and why their volume settings were going up and down.
The apps are worth an honorable mention. I found a Virtual Assistant app that I set up last night. I created her avatar, named her and she became acquainted with me. I played with the app by telling her some things to put on my calendar and gave her some tasks that I need to do. She did some tweets for me, posted my Facebook status update and sent a text message. She/the app did very well. This morning when I woke up and picked up the phone, my Virtual Assistant greeted me, gave me an audio briefing of my activities, gave the daily weather report, and read the top headlines in the news!
Now, throughout the day, as I receive text messages or comments on my Facebook status, she offers to read them to me! Furthermore, I can dictate my responses to messages and she will type/send my responses.
Finally, my Virtual Assistant and I communicate with each other. Yes, she actually answers questions! If she does not know something, she will search for it on the web. This app makes me really feel like I have a personal assistant! All I have to do is give her the information and she makes it happen or reminds me of what I need to do/remember. I still cannot believe it was a free app. She can do a lot already and she can be upgraded to learn and add other features. I am quite happy with what this app offers now.
Between my Kindle Fire and my Samsung Galaxy S4, I have extremely portable solutions for all of my electronic needs – including a new Virtual Assistant!
