Back in the 70′s, chances were that I could be found on a dance floor or the back of a Harley. I hung out with one of the biggest motorcycle clubs in Cleveland. I was not anyone’s old lady, not that many didn’t try, I was a friend with most of the guys in the club and my best friend was married to the president.
My friends were down and dirty bikers, but they weren’t the stereotypical bikers. They didn’t look for fights or opportunities to mess with people. Because most of the guys were Vietnam war vets, we had problems with some of the guys every once in a while. But on the whole they were good guys, held regular jobs and some even had families.
The story “A Lions Pride” by Alyssa Rae, revolves around Alex, who witnessed her mother’s murder. The young descendant of The Lion’s Pride club’s founder, her grandfather, is then totally orphaned when her father is murdered by the rival club’s in the ongoing war to get The Reaper’s Sons out of town. The Lion’s Pride doesn’t want their town ruined by the Reapers crimes like drug distribution and gun running. Her father had been president of The Lion’s Pride until the Reaper’s murdered him. Orphaned by members from the rival club, The Reaper’s Sons , left with the care of her younger sister and the threat of being kidnapped hanging over her head, Alex creates her place with The Lion’s Pride.
Many motorcycle clubs emphasize the concept of family and loyalty to each other . They cover each others back in confrontations and times of trouble. Because of her and her sisters legacy, she has inherited these rights and knows where she can turn during this siege on her family. Wanting to make sure that no more violence will be brought down on herself and her little sister, Alex tries to reconstruct her life and place with The Lion’s Pride.
Alyssa Rae has carefully crafted a non-traditional family functioning in a war of life and death in an urban setting. She has created Alex as a working class heroine who can remind many of her YA readers that the world isn’t made up only by middle class people. They can relate to Alex’s courage and love of her family, including the club. The example of a young woman overcoming adversity makes her a wonderful role model for the readers. and is written in a language easily accessible to a younger audience while being more than interesting for adults.
