One of the things that I love about twitter is that it’s quick, simple and brings together millions of people from all around the world. With a touch of a button you can be closer than ever before to celebs both big and small. They can talk to you and you can tell them something and they’ll be able to see it. Sometimes it’s a bit intense sending a celeb a tweet because you never know if they’ll respond or how they will take the tweet. A lot of times I hold back from tweeting celebs, but sometimes I get brave enough to do it and every once in a blue moon, somebody I look up to might actually tweet me back. I once had Cassadee Pope (Hey Monday, Season 3 winner of The Voice) tweet me during a twitter Q&A but I once had Dan Young (This Providence) tweet me and that was probably when I freaked out the most.
Who is Dan Young?
I’m pretty sure only a handful of people actually know who he is but that’s okay. It’s not about quantity, but about quality. Dan Young is the lead singer of the band This Providence based out of Seattle, WA. They released 2 records on Fueled By Ramen and have done countless of tours. They have even toured with Paramore back in 2007.
Why does Dan mean so much to me?
This is kind of hard to explain because it is personal. Part of the reason is because it brought me and my best friend together and brought us even closer. It’s one of the reasons we’ve gotten so far in our relationship. The other reason could be because This Providence had a special ability to help me calm down when I wasn’t feeling good or if I was having an anxiety attack. At times I could relate so closely to the lyrics it was near scary. And to find out that Dan deals with anxiety just like I do, made me feel a bit closer to him.
So what happened?
It was December 2011. I had recently come home from college for Christmas break and me and my family were out shopping. I got Dan’s tweets sent to my phone and I was at the mall when my phone went off, alerting me that I had a new text. It was a tweet from Dan saying ‘Hi’. It wasn’t anything interesting or important, and I thought somebody who had 15,000 followers wouldn’t pay attention to somebody who replied back saying ‘Hay gurl hay.’ I sent the tweet and went about my day, not actually expecting to get a reply.
A few hours later me and my family were out grabbing something to eat. I checked my phone and saw that Dan tweeted again. I checked it, not expecting what I was about to see. He had actually replied to me. The tweet saying ‘Not replying to this. I aint no girl!’ I didn’t even care about the message. I was just so happy to get an actual reply. I was trying to contain my excitement in front of my family and strangers. The fact that he had spent a few seconds to reply to me ment a lot more than I could explain. I felt like I was on high for the rest of the day. It certainly made my day and whenever I think about it a huge grin appears on my face.
There isn’t anything I would have done differently. Sometimes I wish I had the chance to have an actual conversation or be able to ask him something more in depth and meaningful. Regardless it still makes me happy and I’m glad I had a chance to have just a little bit of happiness with him, since I’ll probably never be able to see him perform live. Twitter is an amazing way to connect to celebrities, and I hope I can connect more with some of my idols.
