Amid the latest debacle of the government shutdown and the mud-slinging by the two parties of the politicians, a smaller yet huge debacle in the eyes of the mainstream media has also hit the table, the name of the Washington Redskins. It may have been pushed to the back burner and all but forgotten until just last Sunday night when during the halftime show, the always opinionated and always rambling Bob Costas weighed his opinion in on it. In his own words, “Ask yourself what the equivalent would be if directed toward African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians or members of any other ethnic group. When considered that way, ‘Redskins’ can’t possibly honor a heritage or a noble character trait, nor could it possibly be considered a neutral term. It’s an insult, a slur no matter how benign the present-day intent.”
While Costas himself may have only intended to stir the minds of his audience to consider what the current name of the franchise means, it seems his words were by far more reaching to the politicians in Washington than they were to the American people or even the Native American community for that matter. A recent article in the Daily Caller today showed that there was a bill in the making in the federal government that would outlaw the Redskins name. Currently the bill is only in the house and only a minority of democrats seem to be in favor of getting this bill on the floor, but regardless of whether or not this bill goes through, you have to ask yourselves “why is the government worried about the name of a football team right now when we have got a huge financial crisis on our hands and a shut down government that is that way due to the refusal of parties to compromise at all?”
Word to the government, and to Obama who had said himself that if he were the owner that he would consider changing it, just who is this name offending? In the latest polls that have come out, 9/10 Native Americans have said they are not offended by this. Do we see lines of people from the Native American communities coming to Washington by the busload to demonstrate or boycott in front of RFK Stadium or discourage people from purchasing tickets to the Redskins games because they think this name is racist? No, and why? Because this name has existed for 81 years and never since its inception have they started an outcry against this. So far the only outburst coming at the Redskins name is coming from the democrats and their supporters who would like to think they can control the sports world and everything in it. Congress, please go back to your posts, fix this government shutdown, get some fences on our borders, figure out what to do with the sequestration, lower the debt ceiling, and maybe stop watching football while you’re at it.
As for the owner Dan Snyder, he needs to be commended for sticking to his rights and telling people that he does not need to cave into the pressure to change the name that is coming only from the media. The name is not an issue, the only issue on the table here is that the media is wrong to bring this to the table at all and they have no right to tell an owner of a sports team what he is, and what he isn’t allowed to call his team.
