I love pants. However, with triple digit temperatures in my near future, I know I will be living in shorts and skirts all summer long. I often hear people say you can’t wear a mini skirt if you are over a certain age. However, wearing a mini skirt doesn’t mean you have to put on a skin tight micro-mini with a tank top. If you think you’re too tall, too short or too anything to wear a mini skirt, think again. Here are a few ways to wear a mini skirt with confidence.
Long and Lean
I’m in my 30s and not a fan of exposing too much. Thus, if I’m going to wear a mini skirt then I may pair it with a tunic tank. Victoria’s Secret has a great selection of mix and match leggings, tunics and mini skirts. The tunic shouldn’t be so long that it covers the skirt. However, a longer shirt can leave you feeling less exposed.
Tight Skirt, Loose Top
If you want to choose a form-fitting mini skirt, try pairing it with a looser shirt. For instance, a shirt with dolman sleeves or a banded bottom will balance out your look. Even a loose, boyfriend t-shirt could be tucked in. Don’t go with a shirt that is too big. After all, you still want to your look to have some structure.
Mini With a Sheer Overlay
Another way for women to wear a mini skirt is to find one with a sheer overlay. This gives your style a little more coverage and, at the same time, some sophistication. According to Averyl Oates, the commercial director of the luxury Web site Luxup, “a mini that features a longer, transparent overlay” gives “the illusion of a short hemline” while still “preserving your dignity.” Oates is in her 40s.
A skirted legging is perfect for someone who wants to wear a miniskirt but in a conservative fashion. You can wear this to a park outing with the kids, for yoga or even a date night. For warmer days, try a skirt with cropped leggings underneath. Ballet flats and a fitted t-shirt make this an effortless outfit.
The colorblock trend has been around for awhile. You can wear a neutral shirt with a colorblock mini. Another idea is to pair a solid, brightly colored shirt with a black or navy mini. American Apparel is a great store to go to for minis and tops in a variety of colors.
An a-line mini allows you to show off your legs without wearing a tight skirt. You can find plenty of options at shopstyle.com. Simply type in “a-line mini skirt” for plenty of options. Unless you are a teen, stay away from pleated, plaid a-lines to avoid looking like a schoolgirl. Of course, when it gets cooler, thick tights can make your outfit more conservative.
Mini-skirts may not be for everyone. In addition, while mini-skirts may not be appropriate for some professional settings and events like funerals, this short skirt is more versatile than you may think.
