In recent years, television has become just as popular a medium as any cinematic blockbuster. With such a wide selection of genres (comedy, drama, horror, even reality shows) and a juicy assortment of characters to choose from, there has never been a better time to dress up as your favorite television personality. Below is a list of ideas sure to impress even the most discriminating TV critics.
Orphan Black – I suggested to a few of my friends with kids that we all dress up like Sarah and the clones (Allison, Cosima, Helena) this year when we take our children trick or treating. Orphan Black has only one season under its belt so it’s possible that these characters may not be easily recognizable yet. However, by season 2, everyone should know, and I will have the bragging rights of being one of the first to dress like tne paranoid and neurotic soccer mom, Allison. Oh, did I mention I have dibs on Alison?
American Horror Story – AHS is now in its third season and with every season focusing on a different story, there are plenty of characters to choose from. It’s also the perfect genre for Halloween. Moira or The Rubber Man from AHS: Murder House (season 1) would make highly recognizable costumes. AHS: Asylum (season 2) offers up an even broader selection including Sister Jude, Bloody Face, and The Angel of Death. AHS: Coven is already terrifying viewers in its third season with characters like psychotic socialite Delphine LaLaurie, and Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. If you’re looking to win “Scariest Costume” at your next Halloween party, any of these characters would be an excellent choice.
2 Broke Girls – Dressing up as a waitress for Halloween may be an unoriginal idea, but if you have a friend that’s willing to participate, I can’t think of anything more original than going as Max Black and Caroline Channing from 2 Broke Girls. The costumes would be relatively easy to put together. You would need two wigs (one blonde, one brunette), two name tags (one Max, one Caroline), two yellow and red waitress uniforms, and for full effect, a tray with some cupcakes on it (decorated for Halloween of course) See? Not only original but simple and fun!
Breaking Bad – If you’ve seen Breaking Bad, chances are it’s on your “Top 10 Greatest TV Shows of All Time” list. It’s actually number one on mine. The show is over now but it couldn’t be a better time to pay tribute to Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, two of the most interesting characters ever made for television. Superheroes and their sidekicks usually make great Halloween costumes, so why not Antiheroes and their sidekicks?
Sons of Anarchy – You don’t have to own motorcycles to dress up like these bikers for Halloween. All you need are some willing friends, a few leather jackets (or the more affordable pleather version) with Sons of Anarchy logos on back, fake tattoos, and some facial hair. Throw in a couple of motorcycle mama’s with bad attitudes and you’ve just won “Best Ensemble Halloween Costume”. You’re welcome.
The Big Bang Theory – Although Sheldon and the gang would probably dress as comic book characters, they’d surely appreciate your super intelligence if you choose to dress as them. Make sure you have plenty of nerd attire to compliment your look. Thick framed glasses, pocket protectors, and a rule book for Dungeons and Dragons are a must. Balance out all the nerdiness with a hot blonde on your arm. BAZINGA!
The Walking Dead – This show provides many cool characters to imitate, and no matter which one you choose, the people will love it! Nielsen ratings alone could prove that. The Walking Dead was actually a comic book with a huge fan following before it became the hit show it is today. Sheriff Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Michonne or Glenn would all be excellent choices, but I prefer Dale. I just love that fishing hat and Hawaiian shirt. And if you don’t want to dress up like the living, there’s always the dead, or rather the undead.
Duck Dynasty – One of the most popular reality shows on television right now also provides some of the most familiar faces on this list. Si, Phil, Willie, Jase and the rest of the Duck Dynasty gang are so popular that you can’t even go in a department store without seeing some sort of merchandise including tee shirts, bandannas, fake beards, duck callers, etc. Most of the items you would need to complete a costume are being sold right now, just add flannel.
Game of Thrones – Let us all take a moment to thank George R. R. Martin for never allowing a dull moment in Westeros, nor a dull costume. I think the ultimate outfit would be Brienne of Tarth. She looks so menacing in all that armor. I’ve seen a multitude of comic-con pictures online of people dressing up like Daenerys Targaryen or Khal Drogo, but mayhap you’d prefer Arya instead.
Once Upon a Time – Well there’s not much to say about this show, other than it is an absolute go-to for Halloween. People have been dressing up as fairy tale characters for years, and this show has plenty to choose from. Snow White, Prince Charming, Rumplestiltskin, and Red Riding Hood are just a few of the characters to choose from on Once Upon a Time. The End.
No matter who you decide to dress up as, have a fun and safe Halloween!
