After operating within the traditional work world for some time, I realized that I have an entrepreneur spirit and prefer to work for myself. This is why I have created blogs (The Political Slant and Seven Atlanta) while also developing my career as a writer through freelance work. In recognizing that success is contingent upon the development and maintenance of good habits, I am always attempting to discern whether I still have any bad habits that need to be eliminated. If you own a business or work for one, you could also benefit from learning more about bad habits that can preclude you from obtaining optimal success. Here are three:
Although broadly defined, multi-tasking is basically defined as the execution of two or more tasks simultaneously. In his own discussion of the disadvantages of multi-tasking, Craig Jarrow notes that multi-tasking can seem like a good idea yet often results in starting many projects without completing them all. In offering a solution for the problems that can result from multi-tasking, Jarrow notes that you should concentrate on one important task until it is finished before beginning something else.
2. Constantly Checking Your E-mail.
This is a bad habit that I struggle with, but I’m getting much better at it. Because I generally see most of the people from whom I receive significant e-mails on a weekly basis, it’s really not necessary for me to check my e-mail more than once a day. Yet I will periodically find myself checking it three or four times a day, and this habit can greatly contribute to a lack of productivity. In short, stopping the work you’re doing to check an e-mail breaks up your “flow” and causes your mind to start thinking about subjects that are unrelated to what you were attempting to do. For this reason, you should make a point to limit how often you check your e-mail in order to help your business function more efficiently.
3. Poor Eating Habits.
Although you might not be prone to make connections between your ability to work effectively and the food you consume, the two are highly related. Eating unhealthy food can have an adverse effect on your work productivity for several reasons, including the fact that nutritionally vacuous foods cannot provide you with the steady stream of energy you need to maintain mood balance and accomplish tasks without feeling fatigued. If you are currently trapped in a cycle of poor eating habits that include things like high-fat, sugary foods, make a point to start eating well today. While many people think doing so is difficult, it doesn’t have to be. Create a plan that includes great superfoods like fruits, vegetables, and healthy nuts such as almonds, cashews, and pecans. These foods will provide you with a proper balance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and proteins that promote great health and therefore work efficacy.
Because I have a deep commitment to being in business for myself rather than working for another person, I know that I may have to work a little bit harder than others in order to experience success in my professional ventures. For this reason, I have become dedicated to the recognition and elimination of bad habits that can preclude me from effectively building my business. If this is your objective, too, consider the three bad habits listed above and determine whether you need to eliminate them from your own life.
