Shortly after I made a commitment to the raw vegan diet, I became very interested in juicing. In addition to buying a juicer, I began purchasing healthy juices from one of my favorite local health food stores. Despite the fact that I am an avid fan of juicing, however, I recognize that there are several drawbacks that result from the enterprise. When we juice them, however, they lose much of their fiber. This is an important fact to recognize, especially since most Americans do not get the 20 to 25 grams of fiber that we are advised to take in daily.
Although we all have different ideas of what constitutes expensive, many people agree that juicing can be very expensive. This is especially the case if you juice for yourself given that it requires the purchase of a juicer which can range anywhere from $40-$300. Some of the higher quality juicers can cost thousands of dollars. In discussing the expense of juicing, LiveStrong notes that extracting juice requires that you use more produce when you prepare meals. For this reason, you need larger amounts of food to make your juice, which translates into higher costs. In recognizing that juicing can be expensive, I think it is also important to note that juicing can greatly contribute to health optimization because of all the vitamins and minerals they contain. Getting in these vitamins and minerals can prevent disease, which could be even more expensive than the juicing itself as a result of medical bills and prescription medications.
3. Loss Of Nutritional Value.
If you want to get all you can out of the juice you make, you’ve got to be sure to drink it right after it’s made. Many doctors and researchers make this argument because of their belief that without the fiber that is lost through the juicing process, vegetables and fruits cannot retain their nutritional value. According to nutritionists such as Monica Reinagel, the phytonutrients and antioxidants begin to break down almost as soon as they are exposed to air and light. However, you should also take into consideration that juices contain a concentrated amount of vitamins and minerals, meaning that you may be taking in more nutrients than if you’d eaten the food in its whole form.
While juicing can be an incredibly effective way to improve your health, individuals who are seriously considering the enterprise should note that there are various drawbacks that result from preparing fruits and vegetables this way.
