As I continue studying to take my Group Fitness Instructor Exam, I realize that there is a lot of information regarding the world of exercising and dieting out there. One concept that seems prevalent is the continual debate about how sugar affects our health. In discussing sugar recommendations, many health experts assert that women should attain no more than 24 grams per day while men should get in 36 grams each day. With that thought in mind, I think individuals interested in maximizing health should be aware of the fitness and nutrition myths that currently exist. Here are three:
On average, you can expect to consume about 13 grams with each glass of milk you consume. This is concerning given that the Food Pyramid Guide recommends consuming two to three servings each day. If a woman were to consume three servings of milk per day, she would be well over the 24 grams of sugar that constitutes the most that should be consumed each day.
2. Granola Bars
A granola bar like Granola Bars Chewy Chocolate Chip is going to come packed with 6 grams of sugar. This is sobering news for individuals who do not want to overdose on sugar. And if you think that 6 grams is not that much, remember that many of us are eating two or three granola bars in order to satisfy our appetites or curb hunger. (Another sobering reality to consider when thinking about the sugar content of granola bars is that they are generally advertised as a highly nutritious food. Yet in addition to containing an ample amount of sugar, granola bars are often highly processed and loaded with additives and preservatives that do not contribute to wellness.)
3. Flavored Oatmeal
Flavored oatmeal-like the cinnamon apple oatmeal that so many are raving about these days-comes loaded with about 14 grams of sugar. This is more than half of the daily recommended allowance for women and more than a third of that recommended for men. With that thought in mind, you may want to consider healthier types of oatmeal if you do not want to run the risk of consuming too much sugar. One option that you have is steel cut oatmeal, which generally contains little to no sugar.
As many health experts know, there is a rising concern regarding how sugar consumption can contribute to declining health. In recognizing this, it is important for health conscious consumers to think critically about the types of food they’re eating. In analyzing the information I’ve listed above, you can begin making prudent food decisions that will help you begin leading a more productive, positive life. Good luck! :)
