Although there are many things that I want to avoid experiencing in life, boredom is near the top of the list. This is the case for several reasons, including the fact that boredom can precipitate a plethora of negative emotions and generate a sense of unproductivity and meaninglessness. If you struggle with boredom and are attempting to overcome it, consider implementing the following boredom-busting strategies:
1. Get Enough Sleep.
In discussing ways to prevent boredom, Osman Hameed points out that boredom and exhaustion are related. To elaborate on this point, he notes that “By simply being tired you are paving a direct route towards boredom. The reasoning behind this is that when you are tired your brain struggles to focus on one particular situation and therefore wanders between many different situations.” The end result is what he deems being “stuck between the gap” of the focused and unfocused worlds. Thus in order to prevent boredom, be sure to get enough zzz’s.
2. Create Goals.
Oftentimes the root of boredom is lacking a sense of purpose. When one feels that life does not have meaning, wandering around in a state of listlessness can be the end result. To prevent this from happening, one should consider the value of creating and working towards the accomplishment of identifiable goals. Goals can help alleviate boredom by causing you to focus on an objective as well as the steps that will be necessary to accomplish it. When you begin setting goals, make sure that they are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-sensitive.
3. Create An Inner World.
This boredom-busting tip is very important because the source of boredom is oftentimes an external source that may be beyond your control. Because this is the case, it is very important that you create an exciting mental world marked by things such as coming up with new ideas, reviewing knowledge, creating stories, or solving internal problems. Because each of these activities are cognitive, active enterprises, they can preclude you from experiencing the internal lull that precipitates boredom. To keep my inner world alive, I have made writing an integral aspect of my life. In addition to having fun during the process of coming up with ideas, I have also enabled myself to alleviate boredom by remaining excited about the likelihood of having my work published. Additionally, my creation of a blog (The Political Slant) keeps me mentally preoccupied with the production of interesting, informative content.
Conclusion
Although boredom may play a primary role in your daily life, it doesn’t have to. By implementing the strategies that I have listed above, you can begin leading a much more productive and positive life. Good luck!
