As an avid health enthusiast, I am always seeking to learn more about what foods to put in my body so that I can look and feel great. My studies continually confirm my belief that consistent consumption of fruits and vegetables is the key to maximizing wellness. And while I tend to gravitate towards the same three fruits (apples, bananas, and oranges), I find myself periodically drawn to blueberries. In researching the health benefits that result from eating blueberries, however, I have come to conclude that I should probably make them a more integral component of my diet. Here are three reasons why:
1. Blueberry Consumption Improves Cognitive Function.
In their discussion of the health benefits of blueberries, WHFoods cites research indicating that the fruit has cognitive benefits. In a study of older adults who ate blueberries daily for 12 weeks, the consumption resulted in improved scores on two different tests of cognitive function involving memory. Participants in the study were fed between 2 and 2-1/2 cups of berries per day. The authors of the study believe that in addition to enhancing memory, blueberry consumption may be responsible for slowing down or postponing the onset of other cognitive problems associated with the aging process.
2. Blueberries Contain Fiber.
In outlining the health benefits of blueberries, Chloe Thompson notes that one cup of the fruit contains 14% of the recommended daily dose of fiber. This is important because fiber has the ability to prevent and relieve constipation. Additionally, fiber can help people maintain a healthy weight. This is the case because fiber is very filling and can preclude people from bingeing and/or eating large quantities of nutritionally vacuous food in an attempt to feel full.
3. Blueberries Fight Cancer.
In discussing the health benefits of blueberries, Leta Shy notes that the fruit contains high levels of antioxidants. These antioxidants help fight diseases such as cancer. How? Antioxidants interact with and stabilize molecules called free radicals, agents that can lead to cancer if they are damaged.
Personally, the fact that blueberries fight cancer is one of the most motivating reasons for me to consume them. I am aware that cancer has reached epidemic proportions and am definitely willing to make the life modifications necessary to preclude the degenerative disease from debilitating me.
When one considers all the health benefits of blueberries, it seems clear that eating them would be advantageous for individuals seeking to maximize wellness. Once one understands all of the health benefits that come with eating blueberries, the next question concerns how to consume them. While I like to eat them alone or in a smoothie mixed with other fruits and vegetables, there are innumerable other recipes that you can use to incorporate them in your diet. Irrespective of how you consume them, however, your body will say thank you. Enjoy!
