Although bananas are my all-time favorite fruit, I am also interested in learning more about and subsequently eating fruits that I am not accustomed to consuming on a regular basis. In researching several fruits this evening, I have discovered that the nectarine contains a wide variety of wonderful health benefits that can help us obtain optimal wellness. Here are three:
1. Beta-Carotene/Vitamin A.
In discussing the health benefits of nectarines, SFGate notes that the fruit is packed with beta-carotene. This is important given that beta-carotene is an antioxidant which affords us protection from the debilitating activity generated by free radicals. Additionally, the body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. This is a very beneficial bodily process given that vitamin A helps us maintain healthy skin, bone tissue, teeth, mucus membranes, and soft tissue. Each cup of nectarines comes packed with 214 mcg’s of beta-carotene.
2. Vitamin C.
As many health experts know, nectarines contain a substantive amount of vitamin C-about 8.4 grams for each medium-sized piece of the fruit. In citing all of the wonderful health benefits of vitamin C, SFGate notes that it comprises a part of a protein that produces skin, scar tissue, ligaments, and tendons. SFGate goes on to note that vitamin C “helps to repair cartilage, bones and teeth as well as heal wounds.” Additionally, vitamin C may help prevent heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.
Each nectarine that we consume contains 2.4 grams of fiber. This is important information given that the majority of Americans do not attain the recommended daily allowance for fiber-25 to 30 grams. Fiber affords us many health benefits, including the prevention of constipation which results from facilitating the digestive and elimination processes. Additionally, consuming fiber adds bulk to our diets, the end result of which is the production of a full feeling that often precludes us from overeating. Once this happens, we are less likely to become obese and subsequently become susceptible to a variety of other debilitating diseases like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
Although nectarines are not a fruit that I am accustomed to eating regularly, they probably should be. Given the fact that they offer us a wide variety of wonderful health benefits, eating them consistently would probably help me attain my goal of achieving optimal wellness. I think they could help you obtain this objective as well. Happy eating! :)
