Shortly after I became a raw vegan, I grew aware of the fact that there are a plethora of healthy fruits that I knew little to nothing about. One such fruit is the persimmon. After hearing several raw foodies rave about its great taste, I decided to try some for myself. Indeed, they are delicious. At the same time, they are immensely nutritious. Here are just three of the many health benefits we attain upon eating persimmons:
In discussing the health benefits of persimmons, Leta Shy notes that just one persimmon comes packed with six grams of fiber. This, she notes, is about a quarter of the daily recommended value. The fact that persimmons are so fiber-rich is very important for several reasons. First of all, the majority of Americans do not attain the 25-30 grams of fiber that is advised for each day. This is a travesty since fiber affords us a plethora of health benefits such as aiding our digestive processes by facilitating elimination. Additionally, fiber promotes feelings of fullness, which can preclude us from overeating.
2. Vitamin C.
As many health experts know, persimmons contain 27% of the daily recommended allowance of vitamin C. In discussing the health benefits of vitamin C, WebMD notes that it protects against “immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.” Additionally, vitamin C is believed to play an important role in limiting the symptoms of a common cold and facilitating the elimination of the cold.
3. Low Calorie + Nutritional Density.
While persimmons come packed with a variety of vitamins and nutrients, each medium-sized piece of fruit has just 118 calories. This is important given that it means people who consume them can contain a high volume of nutrients that facilitate great health without consuming a high number of calories that can be converted into stored fat which precipitates obesity. As many health experts know, many Americans are in the habit of consuming foods that are calorically rich yet nutritionally vacuous such as candy bars and potato chips. While these foods come packed with calories that translate into stored fat, they offer little to no nutritional value and thus play a direct role in detracting from our health.
Although there are a variety of great fruits you could eat in order to help facilitate optimal health, I think you should give persimmons a try. In so doing, you are likely to begin walking in a greater dimension of health which will help you live a much more productive and positive life. Good luck! :)
