Three Nutritional Benefits of Organic Corn

by fat vox

Now that I have been on my raw vegan diet for a while, I know which foods to eat to make me feel good and maintain the energy levels that I need to work and play. At the same time, however, I am interested in learning more about foods that I don’t consume on a regular basis so I can determine whether or not they should be integrated into my diet. In researching organic corn, I have discovered that it offers us a plethora of wonderful health benefits that make consuming the vegetable a good idea. (While organic corn is not the only type that you can consume in order to attain health benefits, non-organic corn can be a GMO that entails health risks you may want to avoid. For this reason, attaining organic corn is probably the best health decision you can make for yourself.) Here are three nutritional benefits of organic corn:

1. Fiber

In discussing the health benefits of corn, WHFoods notes that one cup of corn is packed with 14.3% of the recommended daily intake of fiber. (We are advised to take in 25 to 30 grams of fiber each day.) The fact that corn contains an ample amount of fiber is important given all the health benefits it offers us. Firstly, fiber promotes feelings of fullness and can thereby curtail overeating. When this happens, we are less likely to become obese and make ourselves susceptible to other diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Additionally, fiber plays a primary role in aiding our digestive processes by facilitating elimination.

2. Vitamin C

A cup of organic corn contains 13.6% of the amount of vitamin C we are advised to take in daily. This is great news for individuals who want to optimize wellness given all of the wonderful health benefits that vitamin C offers us. In discussing the benefits of vitamin C, WebMD notes that it aids in immune function, slows down the aging process, and boosts iron absorption. Vitamin C is also used to alleviate the symptoms of the common cold while also eliminating the cold entirely.

3. Manganese

As many health experts know, manganese offers our bodies a plethora of health benefits. In discussing the health benefits of manganese, Organic Facts notes that they contribute to bone metabolism, healthy bone structure, and the creation of essential enzymes that build our bones. Manganese also helps with the formation of connective tissue, regulation of blood sugar level, proper functioning of the thyroid gland and sex hormones, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, and the absorption of calcium. Each cup of organic corn comes with 12.5% of the daily recommended allowance for manganese.

Conclusion

Although I haven’t eaten organic corn in quite some time now, realizing that the yellow vegetable offers a plethora of great health benefits has increased my desire to do so. If you are interested in optimizing your own health, you may also want to consider adding corn to your diet. Good luck! :)
