Three Nutritional Benefits of Plums

by fat vox

Although I am a big fan of many fruits, plums are probably in my top 10 list. In addition to being portable, they taste delicious and are calorically low while also being nutritionally dense. If you are attempting to improve your diet, you should probably consider adding plums to your diet. Here are just a few of the nutritional benefits they offer:

1. Potassium.

As many health experts know, a medium-sized fresh plum offers us 113 mg of potassium. The fact that plums contain an ample amount of potassium is important given that the mineral helps us manage high blood pressure while also reducing our susceptibility to a stroke. In citing some other health benefits of potassium, WebMD notes that it keeps our hearts beating and may play a role in lowering our cholesterol.

2. Vitamin C.

Each plum we eat comes packed with 10% of the daily recommended allowance of vitamin C. This is important given all of the great health benefits that result from consuming it. In listing the benefits of vitamin C, WebMD notes that it offers “protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.” Additionally, vitamin C is believed to aid in eliminating the symptoms of a common cold while also boosting the immune system so the condition can be eradicated entirely.

3. Fiber.

In discussing the health benefits of plums, Chatelaine notes that the high content of soluble fiber they contain facilitates the stabilization of blood sugar levels. Additionally, soluble fiber increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin which-like blood sugar stabilization-can help prevent type 2 diabetes. The fiber content in plums can also play a role in preventing obesity given the fact that foods with fiber facilitate feelings of fullness. Finally, foods rich in fiber play a role in aiding our digestive processes by prompting elimination. Some health experts argue that the role fiber plays in aiding elimination can also prevent the onset of colon cancer.

Conclusion

If you are attempting to improve your health, there are a variety of strategies you could implement to make it happen. However, eating fruit that is affordable and portable is a relatively easy way to accomplish your goal. If you’re looking for a nutritious and delicious fruit to consume as you pave a path towards optimal health, I think you should keep the plum in mind. They’re yummy.
