Although I am much more in to fruits than vegetables, I recognize that incorporating the latter food group into my diet can greatly contribute to my health. Although there are a variety of healthy vegetables that I can consume to help facilitate wellness, the potato is one of my favorites. If you’re interested in maximizing your own health, you should consider eating potatoes also. Here are three reasons why:
1. Vitamin C.
In discussing the health benefits of potatoes, WHFoods notes that they contain 27.6% of the daily recommended allowance for Vitamin C. This is important given that vitamin C does a plethora of wonderful things in our bodies. In discussing the health benefits of vitamin C, WebMD notes that it offers “protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.”
2. Vitamin B6.
Every baked potato we eat contains 27% of the daily recommended allowance for vitamin B6. In discussing the health benefits of vitamin B6, Newsmax notes that the vitamin helps us maintain healthy brain function, synthesize antibodies that fight various diseases, and form red blood cells. Additionally, vitamin B6 helps us maintain normal nerve function. This is important because the proper functioning of nerves plays a critical role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine while also helping nerve cells communicate. Finally, vitamin B6 aids in breaking down and digesting proteins.
One baked potato contains 26.4% of the daily recommended allowance for potassium. This is important given that potassium plays a critical role in ensuring that our hearts beat. In recognizing the integral role that potassium plays in regulating our heart beats, WebMD notes that individuals with high blood pressure, heart failure, or heart rhythm problems should be sure to get enough of it. Additionally, WebMD notes that potassium consumption may play a role in lowering our cholesterol.
Although there are a plethora of healthy vegetables you could consume to attain great health, you may want to give the potato a try. In addition to containing all of the wonderful nutritional benefits listed above, potatoes also come packed with tryptophan, manganese, and fiber. By integrating them into your diet, you can begin optimizing wellness today. Good luck! :)
