At this moment, I am fasting. The fast consists of alternating back and forth between periods of drinking nutrient-rich juice and water. Thus far, I have been experiencing great success and am happy to note that I feel less mentally preoccupied with food. Because I have experienced wonderful mental and physical benefits as a result of fasting, I want to help empower other people to attain the same results. In recognizing the fact that there are several realities that can preclude you from having success on your fast, I want to point out three roadblocks that you should avoid. And they are:
1. Losing Focus.
This is a big one. A while ago, I had a conversation with a loved one regarding what factors preclude an individual from having success in personal and professional endeavors. He informed me that the number one factor is losing focus. I agree with this assessment. In his own discussion regarding the importance of not losing focus to accomplish goals, James Clear cites a conversation he had with an individual on the subject. In explaining the difference between people who were able to accomplish goals and those who weren’t, the coach pointed out that “really successful people feel the same boredom and the same lack of motivation that everyone else feels. They don’t have some magic pill that makes them feel ready and inspired every day. But the difference is that the people who stick with their goals don’t let their emotions determine their actions.” In recognizing that boredom and lack of motivation can cause us to lose focus when we attempt to fast and subsequently pursue other more pleasurable endeavors, it is important for you to devise a plan that enables you to stay on track so you actually complete the fast. For me, this means consciously and systematically watching YouTube videos about the subject of fasting and raw food lifestyles. This keeps my mind focused on all of the wonderful benefits I will receive from abstaining from unhealthy foods or not eating anything at all. This strategy may work for you, but if it doesn’t there are several other tricks you can employ such as reading books about the power of fasting.
2. Not Cleaning Out Your Pantry/Refrigerator.
This roadblock does not affect everyone, but it affects enough people to warrant discussion. When you are attempting to successfully complete a fast, one of the things that can deter you from your efforts is constantly being near food. And that is why cleaning out your pantry and refrigerator prior to your fast is a great idea. I personally did this and have found it to be very effective. If you don’t feel comfortable about throwing food away, you may want to postpone your fast until you have eaten everything in the refrigerator and pantry so you won’t be tempted to eat the items when you start your fast.
3. Negative Feedback.
Everybody doesn’t believe in fasting and that’s fine. One of my favorite personal trainers, Jillian Michaels, has asserted that it isn’t healthy. I respectfully disagree with her as a result of the research I’ve done on fasting as well as my own personal experiences with the enterprise. In many cases, you may find that friends and family members don’t understand what you’re doing but still support you because they love and respect you. Yet in other cases you may find yourself periodically or frequently in the company of people who either don’t understand or simply don’t like what you’re doing. When this is the case, they often feel comfortable expressing their distaste for what you’re doing through things like verbal discouragement or offering you food. If you find yourself receiving this type of negative feedback, you should remove yourself from the presence of these people during your fast.
Although fasting is a wonderful enterprise that can provide you with a plethora of physical and mental benefits, you should be aware that there are several roadblocks that can preclude you from attaining the success that you want. In recognizing what the roadblocks are, however, you can keep yourself on the path to the health and mental clarity that fasting engenders. Good luck! :)
