Although I eat a very healthy diet with great consistency, I am aware that there are several unhealthy habits that still remain an integral aspect of my life. Because I continually strive for self-improvement, however, I am determined to cease engaging in them. While there are a variety of unhealthy habits you may also be attempting to rid yourself of, these three can be particularly debilitating and thus worth eliminating from your life:
1. Sleeping In Your Contacts.
This is a bad habit I have decided to break today. In addition to making my eyes feel itchy, sleeping in one’s contacts can result in a plethora of negative health outcomes. If you’re not in the habit of flossing regularly, you should make it a part of your daily routine immediately. The health benefits of flossing are great and include a 50% reduction in your risk of acquiring heart disease. Additionally, Discovery Health notes that flossing before we brush can make the brushing process more effective. This is the case because by removing plaque from between our teeth, the fluoride that resides in toothpaste can enter more areas of our mouths.
3. Eating When You’re Not Hungry.
In discussing why eating when you’re not hungry is so unhealthy, Reader’s Digest notes that it can cause you to lose touch with your body’s hunger and satisfaction signals. When this happens, you can fall prey to chronic overeating. This overeating can then entail weight gain and make you susceptible to a plethora of debilitating conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, you should take note of the fact that snacking on junk foods when you’re not hungry carries the added health risks that result from ingesting fatty, sugary ingredients.
As many behavioral psychologists note, it can take about 21 days to break a bad habit. If you know that you are engaging in an unhealthy habit such as any of those listed above, consider creating a plan designed to help you cease participating in the behavior.
