Proposing marriage can be a daunting task for the meek. For an adventurous, outdoorsy couple, the options are limitless. Why not pop the question while ziplining? Yes, ziplining! Here are some ideas on how to plan this memorable event.
First, decide on how much time you need to get your ducks in a row. If you choose to travel abroad, think about: purchasing tickets, updating passports, time-off from work, best season at the destination, and getting the hotel, zipline company, and/or tour guide to ink the special date in their calendar.
This consideration may hold the most weight. If spending is tight, then a local zipline company will be perfectly effective for your proposal scenario. If money is less of a factor, you can decide on a vacation destination and seek out the zipline excursion by asking a travel agent, the concierge of your hotel, or checking online with Trip Advisor.com or Yelp.com for recommendations from fellow travelers.
Ziplining is far more common and accessible nowadays. In the U.S., there are hundreds of locations for enjoying the experience over forests, valleys, water, and even city streets. Travelandleisure.com published their choice of the world’s coolest ziplines. Las Vegas boasts ziplining with views of The Strip; Royal Carribean Cruises have ziplines on some ships; and the San Diego Zoo Widlife Park offers a flight over safari animals. In North Carolina, ABCnews.com reported that one couple actually ziplined to their wedding while guests awaited the couple’s lofty approach.
Costa Rica is known for its zipling over jungle canopies and in the clouds above the Arenal volcano. Hawaii offers ziplining as do most islands in the Carribean. Many islands have midnight, full-moon adventures. Your time, budget, and taste for terrain will inform the best choice for you and your (hopefully!) soon-to-be betrothed.
How to Do It
Discuss your plan with a guide at your chosen venue. Enjoy the entire zipline excursion. At the last stop, you fly and land first, and make sure no one is around but a guide (with a video camera and “the ring”). When your in-coming partner lands (and is still adrenalized), grab him/her off the line. Immediately get on one knee and ask. The element of surprise is the epitome of excitement and romance. Assuming the response is “yes”, have a bottle of something sparkling waiting at the lodge below as the thrill-ride ends. Together, it will be the conclusion of one adventure and the commencement of another.
