As a bachelor in your 20s, you are faced with many lifestyle decisions. It’s a time of freedom, transition, and uncertainty. You are most likely just getting your life established and hopefully launching your career. While doing so you will likely be crunched for time and money. The life of a young bachelor is, for many, a memorable period between college life and married life. During this time, you will find yourself disposing of the furnishings and symbols of your youth, but your entry-level salary and possible transient nature will prevent you from purchasing heirloom quality décor for your apartment. Also, keep in mind that during this period you will likely find yourself cooking dinner for your date and you don’t want her thinking you’re a man-child when she visits your bachelor pad.
Tasteful Wall Decorations
While those John Belushi posters and neon beer sign were considered sweet décor during your college days, they don’t exactly provide the proper mood for a young professional and will likely make lady friends think you’re a man-child who will never grow out of that frat-tastic stage. Conversely, you are just starting your life and launching your career, meaning that you are not yet financially established and likely live a transient life so fine art is obviously out of the picture. As a bachelor in your 20s, you will seek to exude style and a touch of class while also living on a budget. Consider replicas of vintage posters that reflect your passions and hobbies. Posters depicting classic car races provide a great starting point for your tasteful bachelor pad wall decorations. Sporting events, tourists destinations, wine, and film are also all good sources to inspire your vintage poster collection. Reproductions of vintage maps are another tasteful piece of wall art for your bachelor pad; consider maps of your hometown or favorite tourist destination.
Mission Style Furniture
In college, your furniture likely consisted of a futon, mini-fridge, and a particle board end table. The problem is that futons tell the world, particularly women, that you are afraid of commitment. Oh, and you likely want a good night’s sleep for those long days at the office. However, as a bachelor in an entry-level job you are unable to afford fine mahogany tables and stylish trendy furnishings. Once again, the solution can be found in seeking a happy medium. Mission style furniture is noted for its rugged good looks and relative affordability. This style furniture builds patina over time and any nicks that may occur during frequent moves only add to the allure. Scour Craigslist and garage sales to get the best possible value.
Women love men that are driven and passionate about things. It is a sexy trait because it shows dedication, passion, intellect, and depth. Keep books around so that you can pass down time by reading about your passions, expanding knowledge of your interests and making you a well-rounded person that can engage in captivating conversations. Traditional bookcases are one way of displaying your library, but for the design-oriented bachelor, there are many non-traditional bookshelves available for your book collection. Function and fashion converge. Bonus points are usually awarded for books of the leather bound variety. You can often find particularly good deals on books at thrift stores, garage sales, and church sales. You might even expand your interests by purchasing random books.
What is a mantique? Well, it’s a term I coined for vintage items that are often associated with the tastes of men and traditionally masculine endeavors and/or interests. Imagine a Polo Ralph Lauren ad and those vintage lacrosse sticks and aged safari gear that provide the backdrop. Relics of traditional sport are a solid way for you to develop an affinity for collecting and also help you furnish your bachelor pad with heirloom items that reflect your interests. Old wooden tennis rackets and vintage golf clubs are also popular items in the “mantiquing” world.
