Getting your business noticed is usually never too easy, especially for a small to medium sized company trying to break into a niche and capture even a small percentage of that market share. Large established businesses that produce items that the consumer can’t live without may already have a large following and a significant advertising budget to promote a product using traditional advertising methods. Just think of all the companies that you see during half time of the Super bowl and imagine their advertising budgets. Some companies may have a sizeable advertising budget but may need to make a unique statement to get noticed. One popular online dating site offered a great deal of money to a city if it would rename itself after them!
Many smaller companies with minimal advertising budgets have turned to what is known as Guerrilla marketing in order to getting noticed. Creating a campaign using guerrilla tactics requires creativity and a lot of effort as alternative strategies usually involve a lot of time and energy for them to succeed. Although this type of advertising may be a lower cost solution compared to traditional advertising, using tools such as social media can pay huge dividends when handled properly.
Using Social Media
Word of mouth is one of the key weapons in your arsenal for getting your business noticed. It is a core method for guerrilla marketing and traditional advertising alike as creating a “buzz” about a product or company can spread like wildfire if done with imagination. Using social Media such as Facebook and Twitter will not cost you a lot of money but it will take considerable time to engage the masses. Remember that you are not the only one trying to reap the benefit of being connected to millions of potential customers, so setting yourself and your company apart from the competition is key to success. The phrase “going viral” has been used to explain how through social media an idea can be turned into an image or video and then shared through thousands of friends, and friends of friends. Time the campaign right, get it in front of the right group of people and the amount of low cost advertising enjoyed by your company can be staggering.
Bring your message to the customer
Being creative in your approach to getting your business noticed only works if you place you message where people are going to see it. So now you might want to think about where people congregate or are required to spend time. In recent years we have seen advertising popping up in some less traditional locations. I was pumping gas the other day and I swore someone was talking to me, I glanced up and there was a video monitor displaying commercials on top of the gas pump. They held me captive for the entire time it took to fill up my tank. Other places where this type of marketing works well are Doctor’s offices, airports and fast food locations.
More unique ways to get noticed
It’s not always enough just getting the message in front of people; quite frequently how it is presented can make a huge difference as well. Have you ever seen a beach volleyball tournament in which the players (wearing only bathing suits) actually have tattoos of their sponsors on their body? Okay, so these tattoos are temporary but when spectators are watching the game the sponsor’s logo is always visible. Marketing is all about visibility, and putting your name out there where it will get noticed is the main goal. A bald guy with a tattoo on his head featuring the name of a hair care company is sure to get a second look.
Think about a brewery’s name prominently displayed on the body or an attractive young woman on a beach. Place it where potential customers will not only see it, but will keep looking at as well! Small businesses need to get their name out there, and although it can be a difficult task it can be done with just a bit of creativity and effort. You need to be smart about it as well; the tattoo on the young woman’s scantily clad body might work well for a brewery, but how much confidence would you have in an attorney using the same method? Make certain the method suitable for the message and use your imagination and you will be on your way to getting your business noticed.
