We all need a vacation sometimes, but with the increase in prices of flights, some place nearby that still seems exotic is necessary. These 5 vacation destinations will let you feel like you travelled the world but are a short driving trip from Atlanta.
Gatlinburg is essentially a little ski town in Tennessee. However, a nice little downtown area has grown up around the ski industry with ice cream stores, local restaurants, and stores. During the summer, there is also ziplining, rafting, kayaking, and many other outdoor activities to try, and you can probably get a good price since the hotels are less likely to be sold out during the summer.
Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head is a beach town, but it isn’t wild and crazy like many others. Instead, the main activity here is golf, and the beach is almost secondary to many people. This makes it less crowded than one would expect. In addition to the beach, there are several shopping centers with local restaurants including the Salty Dog Café. There is also a daily kids’ camp so parents can relax knowing their children are safe and having fun. One can likely get a 3 day stay free from a timeshare company by agreeing to hear a timeshare pitch with no obligation to buy.
Helen is a little German town nestled away in the North Georgia Mountains. It includes German restaurants and stores, as well as the local celebration of Oktoberfest including a parade. There are also things to do in a more natural setting including fishing, and hiking. You can also take a few hours and drive to Cloudland to see Babyland General Hospital, the birth place of the cabbage patch kids.
Savannah is a great little city with trees swept with Spanish Moss, and history just lying around waiting to be found from a trip to the cemetery to a haunted history tour at night. The birthplace of the founder of the Girl Scouts is also here, and makes a great place to visit with younger girls. You can also take a dolphin tour on the Savannah River, or visit Tybee Island for a nice beach.
Orlando is practically synonymous with fun! There is Disney World, Epcot, Sea World, the Wild Animal Park, Universal Studios, and so many other fun things to do. For a less known attraction, visit Ripley’s Believe it or Not Odditorium. There is also an abundance of history and art for those who aren’t quite into the excitement of theme parks.
All of these vacations offer things for adults as well as children, and all of them are less than a day’s drive away from Atlanta, letting you save the airline costs. Hopefully one of these ideas will ignite a spark, and send you on your next excellent adventure!
