It is a tradition to watch the VMA’s each year in my home. Some of the top things that pop into my head when I think of the VMA’s are when Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift. How rude? Also, when Britney sang “Slave for you” while carrying a ginormous snake around her neck.

#5-2009 Lady Gaga: People knew who Lady Gaga was, but her performance took her worldwide. Gaga is the Johnny Depp of the music world because she knows how to make freaky look hot. Her performance seemed to be directed by Tim Burton; it was as theatrical and entertaining as one of his blockbusters. She performed her powerhouse song “Paparazzi.” From pianos, crutches, and fake suicides – who else could pull this elaborate production off?
#4-Nirvana: The band performed crowd favorites such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Rape Me,” and “Tourette’s.” Kurt Cobain was set to sing “Lithium,” but got highly perturbed after technical difficulties with an amp. Cobain decided to quit singing and throw his bass in the air and it landed smack dab on his forehead. Luckily there were no injuries during this performance. But, it was pretty kick ass to observe this spectacle.
#3-2009 Beyoncé: Sister girl broke it down when performing the single girls anthem “Single Ladies.” Between working the crowd and her scandalous moves, she definitely deserves the crown. The dancers grew and grew throughout the performance and the energy was top notch. She also had another great VMA moment when she announced she was pregnant a few years later. So all hail the Queen B.
#2-2003 Madonna/Britney/Christina Mashup: They performed an awesome mix of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood.” This was back when the world viewed both teens as virginal and innocent. Well, Madonna helped them throw that image right out of the window. The biggest shocker of the performance was when Madonna shared a sensual kiss with both Britney and Christina. This is why Madonna still reigns as the Queen of Pop.
#1-From the Queen of Pop to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s VMA performance in 1995 takes the cake. First off, I have to say that this performance was like a mini-concert lasting a full 15 minutes. Michael Jackson performs various songs from “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Black and White” with Slash rocking out, to “Billie Jean.” The entire production lived up to the true Jackson legacy with dancing, moonwalking, smoke, and lights. The entire crowd went crazy during the entire performance, which is why he is known as the best entertainer of all time.
