Do you find searching for new music online to be a hair pulling experience like I do? You either get bombarded with offers to buy music programs or mp3’s, as well as articles that say it’s new music when it’s not. I have a job in a radio station and a lot of my job is looking up brand new music to play on the air. Therefore I am online going through all the new music of 2013 and filtering out the good and the bad. I decided since I had people asking me for lists of new songs, that I would compile lists of popular songs online and share them with everyone that wants to look. One of the most requested lists was the best new R&B songs for 2013 because everyone loves themselves some R&B music it seems. When I found out how hard it was to find good new R&B songs, I decided I will just make my own so there’s at least one legitimate article out there.
For my job at the radio station I only have to find a few songs every week because once they find a quality new song they will play it on loop for quite some time. However for this article I decided to find the top 7 best new R&B songs of 2013 and have brief information and other facts to go along with the songs. There are so much good new R&B music for this year and lots of songs that are borderline pop rock with some R&B mixed in. These are the top 7 new R&B songs of 2013 that I think are quality and good new songs that are R&B all the way. This is just the beginning of our top R&B lists because we have a larger countdown best R&B songs of 2013 list in the works, so leave us feedback on what you think should’ve been included.
1. Ludacris ft Usher & David Guetta – “Rest of My Life”
This is one of my favorite R&B songs for 2013 because it has such a great sound and it just makes you feel uplifted when you listen to it. It has some nice soul to it and it can also be a club banger at the same time. I big reason I love this song besides Ludacris and Usher obviously, but the greatest French music house producer and Disc Jockey around the entire world. He is very well known in the club scene around the country and blew up in the United States over the past 4 years or so. He has sold about 3 millions albums worldwide, as well as nearly 15 million singles all over the world. That was the last time I checked it, so I’m sure by now he has increased his grand total of albums and singles sold. Almost every hot new artist that wants to have some fresh and sick house beats on there track the David Guetta is the first name that comes to mind. Then you add the amazing lyricist Ludacris and all his flavor along with the amazing house beats and transitions by David Guetta, as well as topping it off with world-class vocals by one of the most amazing R&B singers in history the one and only Usher!
2. Trey Songz ft Rick Ross – “Don’t Be Scared”
I love Trey Songz when it comes to the new generation of R&B songs because he has such a great song and has the sound that most women just love to hear. This song was leaked a few times before the official release of the song but even if it was a few days or a few weeks, it still is going to catch all that love and major radio play with all the best R&B songs of 2013. This is an R&B/Hip hop song of 2013 I think but I’m sure some might disagree with my opinion on it. A lot of critics say that Trey Songz is bad to his old formulas with his “Chapter V” album like sex drenched love music for all his adoring lady fans. He’s had so many hot new R&B songs off of his “Chapter V” album it’s just ridiculous. He’s one of the top R&B artists of 2013 in my eyes because of killer songs like this song, “Dive in” (mentioned below), “Heart Attack,” “Playin Hard,” and he definitely adds the gangster swag back into the album as well with tracks like “Check Me Out.”
3. Mary J. Blige ft Drake – “Mr. Wrong”
This is one of the hottest new R&B songs of 2013 even though it was released towards the end of 2012. The release date isn’t always so important to me and in my line of work in radio, we consider it a 2013 song because it’s getting the most exposure and popularity now. Mary J. Blige is the R&B Queen and she is still out there topping the charts and staying as relevant as ever with the younger generation. It’s awesome to see someone that went through so much in life and her career and she overcame all the adversity and is still on top the music industry. The song “Mr. Wrong” was off her album “My Life II….. The Journey Continues (Act 1)” and was released as the albums second single with Drake backing her.
3. Rihanna – Pour It Up
Rihanna has tons of songs because she is the one the queens of R&B and Hip Hop, but I think this song by her is really fly. It’s a cool song that I think a lot of people are going to relate to and therefore it will be popular. She took the song “Pour It Up” off of her seventh studio album titled “Unapologetic” (2012). However, after all the hit singles she had on airplay before that it took a while before they started putting Rihanna’s “Pour It Up” track into rotation. This is the third single off of her once again successful album “Unapologetic.”
4. Trey Songz – “Dive in”
Any r&b music fan these days has to know who Trey Songz is. He is right up there with Usher when it comes to bringing the sex appeal and getting all the women to go crazy that’s for sure. The track “Dive In” was off of the “Chapter V” album released by Trey Songz on August 21, 2012 by Atlantic Records. This is his fifth album so he is pretty well established and not going anywhere in the R&B music industry. He has had a few hot new R&B songs for 2013 so far. Trey Songz was nominated in the BET Award in 2012 for “Best Male Artist” and he also was nominated in the American Music Award in the same year for “Favorite R&B/Soul Male Artist.” Most people would probably say they would rather see his song “Heart Attack” on this list over the song “Dive In.” Considering it was nominated for “Best R&B Song” in 2013, but I believe that “Dive In” is just a much better R&B song.
5. The Weeknd – “Wicked Games”
The Weeknd is new to most of us in the U.S. but The Weeknd is a Canadian artist and has some very cool music. The song “Wicked Games” did pretty well on R&B charts all over the world and is one of my favorite R&B songs of 2013. Even though the track was released in late 2012 it is getting most of it’s glory in 2013. The Weeknd is a recording artist named Abel Tesfaye and he actually started out by uploading music to YouTube in 2010. Abel hails from Canada and is Eithiopian-Canadian. He is not only a recording artists but he is also a record producer. In 2011 he dropped 3 mix tapes that became a hit online all over the world. This is only the beginning for this young artist and hopefully we see some more great R&B songs out of him in the future.
6. Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z – “Suit & Tie”
I think this is such a catchy song and one of my favorites of the year so far for sure and is said to be Justin Timberlakes big comeback song and it started off the year just right. Women everywhere have been waiting for Justin Timberlake to come back to his music career and melt hearts all over the airwaves once again after he took his 6 year break from his music. He wasn’t just doing nothing however for those 6 years, he kept very busy with his big time acting career and also dabbling lots more about the music industry behind the scenes with producing and songwriting for other artists. This is off the “20/20 Experience” album of 2013 and it looks like its going to be one of the top contenders for best album of the year in my opinion. The album was written by so many top of the line artists like Timbaland, Jay-Z, Jerome Harmon, Terrence Stubbs, and others along with JT himself obviously. Timbaland and Harmon were the producers and most people know that almost anything Timbaland is on is surely to be one of the hottest R&B/hip hop albums of the year.
7. Future ft. Kelly Rowland – “Neva End” (Remix)
I really love this song and even though it was dropped a few times later in 2012, I feel the song deserves to be fresh enough to be on my stereo in 2013. Kelly Rowland just has one of he sexiest voices ever when it comes to good R&B music and she has just been really delivering as of 2012 and 2013. It’s so nice to see Kelly Rowland coming back on top to claim her crown and she has been featured in some of the hottest R&B songs of 2012 and 2013. She has been on new R&B and hip hop tracks with artists like Future, Ludacris, Big Boi, and Lil Wayne.
I believe that the rapper future is going to have a big career and that he is really going to blow up in 2013. He is out of a Haitian community in Atlanta, Georgia and is has been signed to Epic Records since 2011. I’m really waiting for Future’s new album for 2013 called “Future Hendrix” and he says its going to be hot new R&B music as well as the typical street bangers. Many major artists are on “Future Hendrix” such as Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Drake, Rihanna, and Kayne West. There are many other good artists on this album those are just the top ones, so you know this album is going to be one of the hottest R&B albums of 2013.
