Ahh. The annual Tacky Holiday Christmas Sweater party is coming up. If you are like most people, you don’t own a “Tacky Christmas Sweater” unless it was handed down to you from your grandma. Looks like it’s time to go to your local thrift store and start searching! Instead of just buying a “tacky sweater” though, why not make it cute? Ugly clothing items can always be made cute, and you could be the most fashionable one at the party by adding just a few simple accessories. These are all very inexpensive ideas; after all, if you’re anything like me, you don’t want to spend more than $20 on something you will most likely never wear again.
The Over-sized Sweater:
We all know that the current fashion trend this fall is over-sized sweaters with leggings, so why not choose the same type of outfit for your tacky Christmas sweater party? Find an over-sized sweater (preferably one that fits over your tush) and pair it with a pair of bright Christmas-colored leggings. Red, green, white, or even better, red and white stripes to make yourself look like a candy cane. If your sweater is already one of these colors and you are afraid you may blind people with all the brightness, choose a more subtle color like brown or black for your leggings. This will allow the sweater to be the centerpiece of this masterful artwork that you are creating.
The Overly Decorated Sweater:
To me, a Christmas sweater is not tacky until you start adding Christmas décor to it, as if the sweater were a Christmas Tree that you have to start hanging ornaments on. This leads me to my next tacky sweater idea…the “overly decorated sweater”. Anything from snowmen, Christmas trees, candy canes, reindeer, Santa, elves, you name it. These things alone are not enough however. The sweater is even better if there are jingle bells attached somewhere. Sparkles and glittery fabric are also great choices to go along with the sweater. If your sweater doesn’t have these things, no worries! My next idea will help you out.
The Do-It-Yourself Sweater:
If your Tacky Christmas Sweater isn’t over-the-top enough for you, simply use fabric glue or sew more décor onto it. You could be like a living Christmas tree and sew ornaments onto your sweater. Stars and fake icicles would be a nice touch. Take it one step further, and attach small stuffed animals like reindeer, polar bears or penguins. This will create a real 3-D effect!
To Top it Off:
Another accessory one simply cannot forget about is what to wear on your head. A Santa hat is usually the typical hat one would wear to accompany the lovely tacky Christmas sweater, but if you want to do something a little more creative and wacky, go for the headbands that have springs and an object attached to them. There are as many options for this as there are Christmas sweaters. Have fun with it!
Last, but certainly not least, are the shoes. You have the hat, sweater, pants, and leggings covered, but what about your feet? You need a complete outfit from head to toe, and the shoes you wear will complete your outfit. Colored Converse are fun to wear with decorative tights and leggings. Christmas House-Slippers are a fun accessory as well, and they will keep your feet warm all night long! These come in a variety of styles, and some even play music! No matter what shoe you decide to wear though, I suggest attaching a few jingle bells to your shoelaces. This way every time you walk people can hear you coming. It’ll be like Santa arriving in his sleigh, and you will make a grand entrance at the party!
The Christmas season is a time to enjoy friends and family, and Tacky Christmas Sweater parties are a great way to celebrate the season while having fun and making memories. Why not make it a memorable party for everyone by going all out and making your sweater as over-the-top as possible? You might just win the costume contest!
