I live in Florida and my mother lives in New Jersey. She came down to St. Petersburg Florida for her high school reunion. The ladies rented a suite at Tradewinds Island Grand Resort. She came down on a Wednesday and flew home on a Monday. It was a long weekend trip for the woman and a great idea to have the reunion at a resort style hotel. I live about forty five minutes away and was happy to go see her there at the beach. We packed the kids up and headed out. Neither my husband or I have ever been there so we didn’t know what to expect. We looked up the resort online but didn’t get too much from their website.
We drove to the resort and when we pulled in their was a manned gate house. We told the attendant who we were there to see and he gave us a ticket for parking. I called my mother to let her know that we were there and asked her where we should go. She didn’t know and we didn’t know either. We drove around the front and side of the building until we saw her. Our first thought was that this was not going to be much fun. It was off to a bad start. Apparently their are multiple buildings within the resort at different locations.
We unloaded the children and the car and headed up to her room. Once we were officially inside the resort, it was amazing. There were people everywhere bustling about, pools every couple of feet, a tennis court, a trampoline with a bungee harness, plenty of restaurants, a small lagoon for paddle boats to travel in, giant banquet rooms and plenty of other things that we didn’t see at first glance. I was instantly impressed by the grounds at Tradewinds Island Resort.
We made our way to her room and learned that the resort was laid out by sections which made it easier to navigate later in the day. My mother introduced us to her high school friends and we went to the beach. Since my mother was a patron of the resort, she rented the cabanas that protected our little ones from the sun. The children were in awe when they got closer to the beach. The resort has a ginormous slide for kids of a certain height and of all ages to enjoy.
The sand was perfect, the sun was just right and the gulf water was a bit chilly but being that we were there at the end of February, it wasn’t terribly cold. You got used to the temperature quickly and the children all had fun with their grandmother at the beach! The kids built sandcastles and got sand everywhere on them so when we were done at the beach, we went to sit poolside at one of the many pools. The kids used the outdoor shower to rinse themselves off and then happily played in the pool. My oldest child got her hair done in cornrows. The woman who did her hair did a great job and she was done quickly.
Hunger set in. So we all changed into dry clothes and set off to a restaurant that was alongside the beach area but still inside the resort. The food was good, they had the Daytona 500 on the flat screen TV’s. My two year old boy fell asleep so we put him on two chairs so he could rest. The waitress saw that he was chilly and brought him a towel to keep him warm. I thought that was very kind of her to do. The staff at Beef O’ Brady’s was attentive and kind.
We finished watching the NASCAR race in my mother’s room. Her balcony overlooked a part of the paddle boat trail which provided us entertainment. Most of the people who were on the boats kept hitting the sides of wall but they all went by us with a smile on their faces. By the time we got down to the rental area, they were closed for the day. The paddle boats closed up shop at 5pm.
We walked around the resort enjoying the scenery and beautiful wildlife. My husband even picked out a room that he wants to reserve for when we can get away for awhile and actually enjoy everything the resort has to offer. We only saw a small portion of the resort and can’t wait to see the rest. By the time we left, we understood the layout of the resort. Living only under an hours drive away, we had no idea that such beauty and relaxation was so close. It was hard to leave and going for a day was a tease. I got to see my mother and pick out our families next vacation all in a day so that was worth it!
