Treatment Options for Schizophrenia

Treatment Options

While the illness can be hard to diagnose, there are several treatment options available for those that need it. No one a treatment option is used for everyone and a combination of treatments are generally the best course of action. One of the most common treatments is an antipsychotic medication. Because almost all patients experience increased dopamine levels, they are given drugs to reduce this. We often refer to these drugs as neuroleptics because they reduce much of the activity of our nervous system. While the side effects can be harsh, they can help a person tremendously.

Some psychotherapy can be done on those afflicted with schizophrenia as well. While it is not the recommended choice by some medical professionals, it can work well with a medication regiment. In many ways, it is treatment that can help support the person and help them deal with their day-to-day activities. While it may not solve their disease, it can help them cope with the problem. Cognitive behavior therapy is also another common treatment option. It can help the person rehabilitate from an acute episode, and may help prevent re-lapse in the future. Any type of positive social interaction can greatly help a person with the disorder.

If the disease can be put under control with medication, self-help may be the final treatment option. While those with schizophrenia may have trouble dealing with social situations, these groups can help improve upon that. Self-help groups offer emotional and psychological support that medication cannot provide. Because those with the disorder are often isolated, this can help them meet new people and potentially find a friend that shares a common struggle. Keep in mind this should not be an initial treatment option, and should only be used when the person is on the road to recovery. This is a common treatment method for other illnesses as well, such as substance abuse or other minor mental health problems.

Those within my local community should seek help if they feel they may have the symptoms of schizophrenia (or any mental health issue). While I live in a small rural community, there are nearby medical institutions which specialize in treating mental illness. One of the biggest treatment centers I could find was about 40 minutes away in Cincinnati. The Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services Provides services for those in the greater Cincinnati area.

The local facility helps diagnose those that may have a mental disorder as well as providing a number of treatment options. Another location that I found was the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. They specialize in treatment for younger patients with schizophrenia. While they cover many different mental illnesses, they are idea if you have a younger child that may need help. Most clinics don’t specialize in younger patients, and those with mental disorders travel to this location for help.

While treatment options continue to improve, dealing with Schizophrenia can be incredibly difficult. Those with the symptoms are encouraged to contact a local medical facility or their doctor to discuss treatment. Most hospitals also have some form of psychiatric care. Having personally dealt with someone who has the disorder, I know how difficult it can be for them and others around them. With potential medical care, they can help treat the disorder and live a normal life within society.
