There are those who tried as part of their political platform to make the argument that the government should be stricter with what they call entitlement programs, one of which they claim is unemployment. Due to the high cost of furthering ones education and the greedy businesses who ship their jobs overseas, it has made the average American hard hit to make a living. Not only that but those few businesses who have kept their business in America are nothing more than non union glorified sweat shops.
If one complains they are told that if they don’t like the working conditions they can just quit. If said person chooses to quit and tries to get unemployment the government sides with the business and refuses the hard worker unemployment.
My husband worked for one of those sweats shops for the last five years. He went to the Doctor and was diagnosed with Metatersalgia and planters fasciitis. The doctor wrote a note explaining that the working conditions can not only cause these problems but they also make them worse. He was told by management that he could not be put on light duty to help with his physical problems. He also has carpel tunnel syndrome and back problems.
Aside from the physical problems that most employees have to endure working for these sweat shops, there are everyday problems with machines breaking down, an increasing heavy work load, and interruptions to go outside in all kinds of weather to perform duties that are not in the job description! The everyday work load in these sweat shops also increases to fill in for employees who are absent, recently fired or quit due to the harsh environment. The pressure to try to get all the assigned work done along with these many interruptions and setbacks is astronomical to say the least.
We ended up having to pay a sizable insurance copayment to get the note from our doctor and with nothing to show for it. My husband continued to work under these conditions until February 12th 2013. He quit due to a problem arising with a fellow employee creating a hostile working environment. This problem never would have developed in the first place if management did not play the employees against each other by showing favoritism! When he was harassed on the job for this incident he saw no other alternative except to quit.
After applying for unemployment they called us back and the caller left a whispered message into the machine that we were barely able to hear. She whispered that if we did not call back within 24 hours we would not get unemployment. The same person did this on two different occasions. I think that they purposely designate a specific person with a very soft whispered voice to leave these messages just so that the person receiving the message will not be able to hear it and then not meet the 24 hour deadline.
After two long phone conversations we were given a notice that my husband did not go to management with his problem. He did go to management but since it is their word against his word we have no proof.
Situations like this happen all over America but are kept under wrap because most employees cannot afford to quit and unemployment always sides with management. Not only that but if a fellow employee takes the side of another employee then they are afraid that their job would be in jeopardy.
The first time my husband applied for unemployment was in 2007 when he quit his job to move to the home we are presently living in which is an hour and a half away from his work providing the weather is good. He also had back problems due to heavy lifting and after the hour and a half drive he was in much pain. However, Unemployment sent him a notice stating that driving an hour and a half from work was not unreasonable and they rejected his claim.
My husband started working at the age of nine years old and has never collected unemployment or had any lapse of employment until 2013. He is 58 years old which means that he has worked steady for over 45 years.
If anyone is entitled to unemployment it would be my husband! He has had a hearing problem and hearing distortion since birth. Since he was on a so called work program in high school they did not help him with his speech or hearing problem. He is one that fell through the cracks.
I just wanted to get his story out to all those who think that getting unemployment is easy! I also want to add that even if one does get unemployment it is just as hard to keep the benefits coming. The recipient of unemployment benefits has to apply for at least two jobs every week and keep a log of all jobs applied for. He also gets weekly job notices from unemployment with jobs that he must apply for and cannot refuse a job even if it is the type of work that he physically is no longer able to do. Also, getting proof that one has physical limitations is very costly and time consuming.
We had to go to two different doctors just to get a note from one of those doctors about my husband’s foot problems. She wanted my husband to go to a back doctor but we did not have the money for the insurance copayment. As it is it took us a year to pay for the copayment just for three doctor visits and a few x-rays!
Another entitlement program that the republicans complained about is food stamps. This amazes me that it should even be brought up because nothing is mentioned about entitled millionaire CEO’s of so called nonprofit hospitals making over a million dollars a year or government officials who rake in a half million a year for retirement. Funny how you also don’t hear much about the government officials who give themselves raises and make as much as the president!
At any rate, in order to get food stamps one can have no more than $200.00 in their saving and or checking account, one car and one house. Then one must work for their food stamps by taking assigned government jobs. These entitled poor end up working for less than $2.00 an hour just to get money for food! When you figure the cost of driving to and from these assigned government jobs it is not worth it at all. To me the best option for decreasing the cost of food is to grow your own vegetables and eat less meat dishes. To me the best budget stretchers are beans, lentils, and a whole lot of imagination.
Even if there are a few poor who take advantage of the system the money they get is far less than the greedy capitalist who makes a half million dollars a year for doing practically nothing. Why doesn’t anyone ever mention them when it comes to that often used word ENTITLEMENT?
