Here’s the list of items I bought for my wardrobe in preparation for a seminar:
Dress (Brown) = N4000
Dress (purple) = N8000
Brown Dress (tailor) = N1600
Blue Dress (Tailor) = N1300
(That’s for dresses overall)
Shoes (black) = N4000
Beads(Neck and earrings)= N800
Bangle (brown) = N400
Hair clasp = N400
Rings (black & gold) = N200
Total = N20,700 = 130.6406 US dollars
(N stands for naira. To convert naira to dollar, you can Google, for example, “convert 50 naira to dollars”)
I wanted to have new clothes to wear at the ECK Regional Seminar that took place in Abuja from the 17th to the 19th of May,2013. I often take photographs of myself and some of my friends at ECK functions so I didn’t want to look monotonous. Besides, I look forward to ECK seminars and consider them to be events worth looking good for.
I bought two dresses from a boutique and gave a seamstress material to sew two more for me. I didn’t include a handbag in my list because I already owned two which seemed okay to me – one black and one brown. I bought a number of accessories, fixed my hair and my nails. I already had a few accessories outside of the ones I bought which I also used at the seminar. I bought one black shoe and added a brown pair which I already had.
I had a small budget so didn’t want to spend too much preparing for the seminar. I also had to take into cognizance my expenses at the seminar itself. I wanted to have enough left over to tide me to my next salary at the end of the month since it was already the middle of the month.
On Thursday, I wore Dress (Brown) along with my wristwatch and other accessories I can’t remember right now. I wish I had taken a photograph of myself that day. Then it would have been clear what I wore. I had the watch long before the seminar so I didn’t include it in the list.
(See Image 1 for the dress and Image 2 for the wristwatch)
On Friday I wore Dress (purple). (See Image 3) The silver bracelet wasn’t part of the list because I had it before. So also the silver ring ring on my little finger.
On Saturday I wore Brown Dress (tailor). (See Image 4) I must confess here that the material for the clothes labelled “tailor” were gifted to me so I did not include the cost of the materials. I don’t think both materials combined cost up to N8000 (50.54 US Dollar). That would of course had brought the garnd total to about $190. Even at that you could still call that under $200. Still like I said I don’t think both of them combined would have come up to that and I am not prepared to ask because I don’t think it’s a good idea to look a gift horse in the mouth. It might seem ungrateful.
The beads around my neck I already had long before the seminar. The shoes are in Image 5.
On Sunday I wore Blue Dress (Tailor) (See Image 5). I wore all that along with the handbag. Remove the silver bangle from the list. I had it before.
So for me it’s basically about being creative and mixing it up – old and new – but mostly new if you can afford it and if the occasion calls for it.
