In addition to sodium, calcium, and potassium hydroxide based permanent relaxers, there is also Lithium Hydroxide. This product however, does not work well for those who desire their hair to be bone straight. Most likely, that is why Lithium Hydroxide based perms, have not sold as well as chemical relaxers that totally straighten the curl pattern of African American hair.
Now that an increasing number of black women are wearing natural, and or ethnic rather than Euro-centric hair styles, new life may be breathed into Lithium based products. Texture softeners and texturizers, are gaining momentum with women of color who desire the best of both worlds. These products soften and relax the hair’s texture without removing all the curl.
African Pride offers a hair texturizer, made with Lithium Hydroxide. Shea Butter miracle moisture intense Texture softening elongating system, is suppose to elongate curls, reduce frizz, and add bounce, for those who desire their tresses to have a less relaxed, and more natural look.
Another texturizer that offers wash and wear style is, Kerasoft may be another choice. You will be able to wear your hair in a variety of styles that look natural, curly, coily, and wavy. Your tresses should elongate, and have more bounce to the ounce. No one will know for sure that your mane is not 100% natural but you and or your hair dresser. What works best for me, is applying leave in conditioner, putting a plastic cap on my head, then wearing a silk scarf over top. The heat from the plastic will ensure that your conditioner goes from root to core to the ends of your hair. I either sleep in the cap and scarf at night, or wear them for several hours during the day.
I suggests you routinely massage your scalp, while wearing the scarf plastic cap duo. When you remove them, gently fluff hair with your hands. If you feel any really dry strands, apply more moisturizer and put the cap and scarf back on for a little longer. If when you take them off your hair feels wet, just massage the scalp, and gently lift hair with your hands. Allow hair to air dry until you do not have the 1980’s drippy curl perm look.
