Ways to Make More Room for Plants in the Kitchen

by fat vox

Those that love plants but do not seem to have enough room in the kitchen can still successfully grow many different types of foliage. It is possible to make room for everything from air plants to vines. Every kitchen has wasted space, and houseplants can take up the otherwise unused room. Consider these creative, stylish and very easy ways to make room for plants in the kitchen. These unique ways to display houseplants will add natural beauty to the heart of your home, and without sacrificing counters and valuable floor space.

Add Glass Shelving Across a Single Kitchen Window

If you are lacking space for plants, consider your kitchen window. The entire span of the frame from top to bottom provides far more room than the ledge. Consider adding glass shelving across the window using wooden brackets that are painted or stained to match the framework. It will provide lots of room for small planters and eye catching decor.

Hang Small Containers of Plants from the Side of a Lower Cabinet

The side of a lower cabinet can be ideal when seeking room for plants. Mount a wooden dowel rod on the side of an outer cabinet that receives natural light. Hang a basket of the appropriate size from the rod, and fill it with plants of your choice. A vinyl coated wire basket or the traditional woven type with a plastic liner will work beautifully.

Create a Vertical Spice Rack Display in a Sunny Location

A vertical spice rack will provide lots of room for plants in a kitchen. It does not have to hang from a door. It can be mounted on the side of an upper cabinet and secured on the side of a lower cabinet. If it faces a sunny sliding door or window, it can be used to display plants in small pots along with other decorative items of interest that coordinate with the kitchen.

Hang a Window Box on a Soffit beneath a Skylight

Soffits in the kitchen are good for more than just holding upper cabinets and inset lights. In a kitchen with natural light from above, the soffit is the ideal location for a window box filled with live plants. If the upper area of the space offers plenty of natural light, mount a lined window box, and paint it to coordinate with the soffit. It will appear built-in. Fill it with fertile houseplant soil, and add your favorite plants.

Those that think they do not have room for plants might actually have more room than they ever imagined, especially in a kitchen with vertical options. Consider the aforementioned spaces, and pay close attention to natural sources of light. Add hangers, holders and stylish racks, and fill them with live plants. Just about any kitchen has room for plants of every size.
