I have always been curious when it comes to things of the heart and mind, forever searching about how things work within our lives and others. These are just my thoughts and ramblings and nothing more. Our human spirit is complex and is forever in motion and changing. In all of us there is light and darkness, a positive and negative. It is so with most things within the universe. I hope you enjoy my thoughts, using metaphors of darkness and light to represent the human spirit..
“A Metaphor is a device for seeing something in terms of something else. It brings out the this-ness of that, or the that-ness of this.”
(Kenneth Burke, A Grammar of Motives, 1945)
Darkness, without light, may represent the human spirit that moves in directions that does not bring joy or happiness, but adds to confusion, hurt, and unrest. It is our self will or flesh as you may.
The light may represent the better side of man, having saving grace, the loving side of the human spirit that shows much goodness, mercy, and compassion.
Darkness is defined in many ways. It can be a total darkness void of any light or having a little light which is dim and sometimes hard to see. Darkness is mysterious and secretive. Many think that darkness denotes evil but sometimes it is a state of ignorance.
We all have run into the dark to hide from life’s trials. There we think we can hide and sometimes find a safe haven. The light sometimes searches us out through others but sometimes we are not ready and we step back, falling deeper into the darkness, as the light may hurt our eyes and our heart.
In some instances, we long for the light but we hide in the shadows, hoping to capture just a glimpse of the light. We are fearful of stepping out of the shadows. Darkness does not care for the light. It longs to keep us captured in chains, in the dungeon of our souls. Darkness lives in all of us and it is a battle daily to not let this darkness take us over.
Darkness may come in many forms, pretending be to a light. If we had looked closer we would have known the difference. Playing in the dark sometimes is a dangerous endeavor and we may find ourselves captured in a dark abyss. There is no light and we are stranded in a dark place and cannot see to get out. Our only hope is that the light will seek us out. It is then we can grab onto the light, allowing the light to pull us out of the darkness.
To have light, is to have a truth and a visible illumination within one’s life. The light can come in many forms such as kindness, love, and an openness to share one’s life with others. It does not have its own agenda and usually is not selfish.
Have you ever noticed that summer has more hours of light? Many people get depressed during the winter months. It is lifted when there are more hours of light in the day.
In the light everything is exposed and nothing is hidden. The light gives us a chance of renewal. Restoration can only come when someone is open to the light. When one see’s the light, it can capture our heart but only if we are willing. It has a gentle calling. The light does bring newness to ones soul. It can be more powerful than darkness but it is a gentleman and never forces its own way.
I believe God is light.
As the sun comes up do you notice how slowly and gently the sun moves over the horizon, welcoming a new day.
It is not easy to stay in the light as darkness is always going to come and entice us. We have to be prepared. If we keep just enough light to see our way through the darkness then we will always have a way out but I say open the curtains, open the windows. Let light shine!
Picture a small candle burning in the dark. In total darkness, a small flame can illuminate the darkest of rooms. This is a miracle in itself. Should the candle blow out, leaving us in total darkness, don’t lose heart! The light will find us and seek us out. Just wait, close our eyes, and pray. The light will come and we will welcome the light with an open heart..
When Darkness Meets the Light
When darkness meets the light there will be battle of wills. It has been since the beginning of time. No one can stay in the light all the time, it is impossible but it is something we should always strive for. There are ones who choose to stay in the darkness. I always wondered why it is so hard to stay in the light and so easy to stay in the darkness. I believe because we are imperfect humans.
Darkness does not care for the light. For in the light all things are exposed. All things are illuminated and can be seen for what they really are. For many who are caught in the dark without their consent, they are like prisoners set free, when the light comes. They run to the light with such joy and relief. They no longer have to hide. Their prayers have been answered.
There are some who relish in the darkness. The little bit of light that is left in them is constantly being blown out by their own hands. They do not want to see the light in any fashion. Should the light come, they cover it up or run in the opposite direction.
The battle between dark and light begins. If darkness detects light, it may become angry and have these disgruntled feelings towards the person who carries the light. The most miraculous thing is the light never tires. It will always seek the darkness. The darkness may hide for a long time, but the light will always want to come and bring light into the dark place.
It is up to us how much of darkness and light that we allow to shine. We all have the chance to shine and show our light to all who cross our path. It is a wonderful thing to show love to one another and sometimes much harder to love ourselves. Once we love ourselves then we are able to love one another.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King
