Near Clarksburg, West Virginia, there are several state parks in which to see spring wildflowers locally. All are within a one-hour drive from Clarksbuurg, West Virginia.
One such location is Blackwater Falls, located in Davis, West Virginia. It is about an hour’s drive from Clarksburg. Blackwater Falls is a magnificent site to behold at any time of the year. The falls of the Blackwater River plunge five stories, and then wind through an eight-mile-long gorge. In spring, the resort is dotted throughout with wildflowers. In addition to the usual violets and dandelions, you may also see buttercups, red and white clover, and a few lady’s slippers. If desired, visitors may stay overnight at Blackwater Falls, as the lodge offers food, comfortable accommodations, and Wi-Fi. There is no admission fee, although overnight packages are available.
Located in Lost Creek, near Clarksburg, West Virginia is Watters Smith Memorial State Park. Beginning in May, you may see wild geraniums or trillium. An occasional orange day lily is also possible. Also, look for clover; it comes in both red and white varieties.
Coopers Rock State Forest in located in Bruceton Mills, about an hour from Clarksburg. In June, visitors may see the rhododendron, the state flower of West Virginia. Mountain laurel is also plentiful.
Located in Fairmont, about 30 minutes from Clarksburg, Prickett’s Fort also offers a variety of spring wildflowers, including violets, dandelions, and clover. In addition, Prickett’s Fort offers various events in which costumed interpreters recreate 18th century lifestyle. Arts and crafts are for sale, and there is a variety of artists, such as blacksmiths, spinners, and weavers, demonstrating their crafts.
Located in the city of Roanoke, in Lewis County, is Stonewall Resort. It is about 30 minutes from Clarksburg. Here, you may see wild daisies, or wild ferns. In addition to seasonal beauty, the resort offers overnight accommodations, meeting and banquet facilities, several restaurants, golfing, and a spa.
Whichever park you decide to visit, you will certainly find spring wildflowers in abundance. The season for spring wildflowers begins in early to mid-April, and lasts through mid-June.
