Ever wonder what the cast of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ was doing before they began sucking us into the addictive Rosewood drama and mysteries every Tuesday night? A few members of the cast we were already house-hold names. And some of the actors and actresses came out of nowhere, and took the world by surprise, leaving us all to question how we had never heard of them before.
Before 17-year-old Sasha began nailing the role of queen bee Alison DiLaurentis, her acting career really hadn’t taken off. She began acting when she was 6 years old as Buffy on the WB’s Family Affair, debuting in eight episodes. After Family Affair her next major role wasn’t until 2009 when she played Amanda Strazzula in Heroes. She had a few walk-on roles on Without A Trace, CSI: Miami, House, and Medium. It is safe to say Pretty Little Liars is the largest project she has ever taken on, and she is definitely making a name for herself as Alison DiLaurentis.
For a lot of crazed Fangirls it’s impossible to imagine a world without Keegan Allen, but it actually wasn’t that long ago that the movie business was indeed without Keegan Allen. Toby Cavanaugh is the only major role Allen has ever landed. Other than Pretty Little Liars the only other parts he played were walk-on roles on shows like CSI and Big Time Rush.
It’s hard to believe Spencer Hastings is the first major role for Troian considering she is the child of two successful producers (David Bellisario and Deborah Pratt). She did have several minor parts and walk-on roles in shows and movies like JAG, Quantum Leap, NCIS, and Archer House (mostly shows her father produced).
Shay Mitchell is no different than Sasha, Keegan, or Troian when it comes to her acting resume. Her first role was as a model on Degrassi in 2009 (not a surprise seeing as how she is from Canada), then she scored a walk-on in Rookie Blue, and had a small role on Aaron Stone. Shockingly, this wholesome star also had a minor stint along side Sean Paul as his love interest in his racy music video, “Hold My Hand,” before she was cast on Pretty Little Liars.
It’s clear the creators of Pretty Little Liars were gambling a little when they were casting the roles of Alison, Toby, Spencer, and Emily. There was no way they could have guessed that the inexperienced newbies they chose would take their parts to whole new levels and blow not only their minds, but the minds of millions of viewers around the world. Some would argue that a large part of the show’s success is owed to the immense talent of the actors and actresses behind the villains and victims of Rosewood. For Pieterse, Allen, Bellisario, and Mitchell, Pretty Little Liars was the big break struggling actors and actresses wait their whole lives for, the big break that solidified their names in the history of television.
