We are on the lookout for any birthday related books as we have a birthday coming up soon. Any holiday I try to checkout books from the library on the particular holiday. Birthday Monsters by Sandra Boynton is a chunky board book. Board books are practically indestructible as they have thick cardboard pages that can be chewed on and treated more harshly and still be in great shape.
If your child is scared of monsters, do not fear. The monsters contained within Birthday Monsters by Sandra Boynton are friendly! They are smiling and happy and gentle. I cannot say they are on their best manners though. So watch out for your child getting a bit upset when the monsters steal the show, literally!! When you open this book, on the first page you will see five monsters grinning at you, holding balloons. Turn the page and you see a hippo in the bed. Way too early to get up yet, the hippo hears a banging on the door and then the door being knocked down. Hmm, what could that be? Ahhh … “THE BIRTHDAY MONSTERS ARE IN TOWN!” This page shows the hippo still in bed but with a wide eyed, shocked facial expression.
All of the birthday monsters run in with presents under their arms and say let’s begin. The next page shows the monsters carrying the hippo downstairs and then show the monsters throwing around his cereal “like confetti.” The next page shows the monsters checking their watch, and they say it is time to open presents now. The monsters open the presents as of course they brought presents that THEY like and the hippo gets the wrapping paper but THEY get the presents! Onto the next page where you see the monsters closing their eyes and saying for the hippo to go hide! The hippo hides in a grandfather clock and waits for 20 minutes for them to find him The next page shows the monsters getting in the fridge. Then it is time for cake, the hippo closes his eyes to make a wish, and then opens his eyes to find…no cake! The monsters have cake all over their faces.
The next picture shows the monsters waving bye and leaving. The hippo looks very sad, the monsters came and took his gifts, even ate the birthday cake, and made a huge mess, what else can go wrong for him? Another knock at the door…the monsters are at the door with cleaning gear. Then you see the monsters repairing and cleaning up. The hippo then finds a huge birthday cake, presents, and a card from the monsters. The book ends with the hippo smiling ear to ear.
Birthday Monsters by Sandra Boynton is a fun, entertaining book that I would recommend, surprises around every corner! My daughter enjoyed this book even before she knew the ending. Some pictures look shaded in bright colors while others are colorful painting-like pictures of cartoon characters. Simple pictures on each page makes the book engaging for the youngest readers. Sensitive children may get very upset at those monsters until they see the ending.
Here is another great monster book for children.
