Writing Assignment: Water of Life

Instructional objective: Students will write about the following six Bloom’s Taxonomy Questions for the Hero’s Journey tale called “Water of Life.”

After reading the story called “Water of Life,” get your students to respond to the following questions.

  • Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey: 12 steps and 7 characters

Students answer the following questions:

1. Knowledge

A. Looking back to the poster of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, TELL what you think the “Ordinary World” means.

B. IDENTIFY what would be the “Ordinary World” for the role-play called “The Water of Life.”

C. IDENTIFY what you think would be the “Call to Adventure” for this role-play.

D. The next step is called “Refusal of the Call.” In this role-play, they do not refuse the call. TELL what they did in response to the visit by the old man.

E. TELL who you imagine would be the mentor of this story and tell what he or she advised.

F. The fifth step is to “Cross the 1st Threshold.” IDENTIFY who is the first to cross the threshold and TELL who the “Threshold Guardian” might be and how the Threshold Guardian enacts his or her job.

G. Step 6 involves meeting up with “Tests, Allies, and Enemies.” IDENTIFY who the allies or enemies might be. Also, TELL what test the oldest brother is given to perform.

H. TELL what happened to the middle brother and the younger brother.

I. It is now left to the sister to try to make her “Approach to the Inmost Cave.” TELL how and why the youngest sister succeeded when her three older brothers failed.

J. IDENTIFY what you think would be the “Supreme Ordeal” experienced by the sister.

K. Since the sister passed the tests of the “Supreme Ordeal,” TELL about her reward.

L. Now that the sister has the three treasures, TELL what happens on “The Road Back.”

M. IDENTIFY what would be considered the “Resurrection” in this story.

N. It is time to “Return with the Elixir.” IDENTIFY all the parts of the conclusion that could be considered the “Elixir.”

2. Comprehension

Briefly DESCRIBE this story IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

3. Application

DETERMINE who you would consider to be the true “Hero” of this story.” Please explain why.

4. Analysis

DETERMINE THE FACTORS that would make someone a “Herald” and decide which character or characters played that part in this story.

5. Synthesis

A. SUGGEST who or what a “Shapeshifter” is and who or what might have played that role in this story. B. SUGGEST who or what a “Shadow” character could be and who or what in this story might be playing that role. C. SUGGEST who or what a “Trickster” character could be and who or what in the story might be playing that role.

6. Evaluation

Think back to a time when you wanted something or someone very much. EVALUATE and GIVE YOUR OPINION as to whether there were any “Threshold Guardians” who attempted to hold you back. Tell about this event.
